Here are some notable passages:

On revisiting ancient Athens, he describes how we'd all be disappointed. ' The streets were narrow and dirty. The houses, constructed of wood and sun-dried clay, were so flimsy that robbers gained entry by simply digging. People relieved themselves in the courtyard of their own home, or even right in the streets, where the mess would sit until a slave sluiced it away,'(p.27)

On Scotland's golden age: ' Mutual cerebral stimulation. You've got people striking sparks off each other. One person makes a comment, say a businessman, and then someone from a very different field adds to that, takes it in an entirely different direction. '

A common theme in this book is that creativ explosions are the result of interdisciplinary forces.


Creative people are physiologically more sensitive to stimuli. Engaging in a feast and famine dynamic.



Silicon Valley. "Just think about it. These entrepreneurs, were told, deserve their money because of the risk they take. But you don't see people jumping off the tops of buildings here. They tend to land on their feet. Most of the people in tech will admit if they lost their job, they would find another one. It's easier to take risk when you're insulated from it."(p.301)

On weak ties. You are more likely to learn something new from a weak tie. A weak tie is more likely to come from a different background than you, this the benefits of an immigrant society such as Vienna or Silicon Valley. "(P.303)

Pada suatu waktu di Athena Kuno, Aristoteles pernah berkata:

"Tidak ada seorang yang genius tanpa sebuah pemikiran yang gila.".

Pada kesempatan lain, juga di Athena Kuno, kali ini giliran Socrates yang berkata:

"Satu-satunya kebijakan sejati adalah mengetahui bahwa kita tidak tahu apa-apa."

Pemikiran-pemikiran seperti itu mendorong Eric Weiner, seorang jurnalis sekaligus penulis, untuk mengetahui apa sebenarnya yang membuat Athena Kuno sangat bergairah dalam hal kegeniusan dan kreativitas berpikir. Sangat bergairah, sampai-sampai ia menyebut Athena Kuno sebagai tempat yang "menghasilkan lebih banyak pemikiran brilian dibandingkan tempat manapun yang pernah dilihat dunia sebelum maupun sesudahnya." Mengapa? Ia bertanya. Jawaban yang ia temui sangatlah menarik, yaitu 
  karena warga Athena Kuno senang berjalan kaki.


Faktanya, terdapat kaitan yang menarik antara berjalan dengan kreativitas. Penelitian dalam Journal of Experimental Psychology mengatakan bahwa tingkat kreativitas dari orang yang berjalan kaki "secara konsisten dan signifikan" lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan mereka yang sering duduk. Dengan berjalan kaki selama lima sampai enam belas menit, angka respon kreatif yang muncul dua kali lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan mereka yang duduk secara terus menerus.

Sampai disini mungkin kita bertanya-tanya. Apa itu kreativitas? Apa itu genius? Weiner sendiri sebagai sang penulis berpendapat bahwa kreativitas adalah "respons terhadap lingkungan kita.". Dari segi bahasa, genius sendiri berasal dari bahasa Latin. Orang-orang Romawi menganggap genius sebagai sosok tak kasat mata yang terus mengikuti seseorang kemanapun dia pergi (dan omong-omong, lihat kedekatan antara definisi genius ini dengan kata dari bahasa Arab yang juga mirip, yaitu jinn). Genius mengalami pengubahan makna pada abad ke-18. Makna terkini dalam kamus, seperti dikutip oleh Weiner, mendefinisikan genius sebagai "Kekuatan intelektual luar biasa, terutama seperti yang terwujud dalam aktivitas kreatif." 

Beberapa pemikir mencoba untuk melakukan kajian mengenai kegeniusan. Francis Galton, seorang ilmuwan Inggris, berpendapat bahwa genius bersifat herediter atau menurun secara genetik. Dengan kata lain, genius itu dilahirkan. Tetapi pandangan ini mengalami perubahan dan digantikan dengan pemahaman bahwa genius tidak melihat kepada sifat herediter genetik, tetapi dapat dibentuk. Itu berarti, 
  semua orang berkesempatan untuk menjadi genius.
 Faktanya adalah, kegeniusan itu bersifat berkumpul. Dalam artian, orang-orang genius berkumpul di satu tempat. Athena, Hangzhou, sampai Silicon Valley membuktikan itu. Mereka berkumpul dan berkarya, membawa zaman emas bagi tempat dimana mereka berkumpul. Pertanyaannya adalah, mengapa? Mengapa mereka berkumpul di tempat tersebut?

Tempat-tempat tersebut memiliki pemicu. Lalu, apakah pemicu yang ada di Athena sama dengan tempat-tempat lain yang dikunjungi oleh Weiner dalam pencariannya? Ternyata tidak. Hangzhou melesat karena kedekatannya dengan alam, teh, dan sistem ujian birokrasi yang efektif, Florence karena kekayaan uang dan patronasi, Edinburgh karena tanah dan sistem pembelajaran universitas yang berlangsung dua arah, Kolkata karena sosialisasi terbuka dan percampuran atau inseminasi pemikiran India dan Inggris, Wina karena apresiasi masyarakat, imigran dan Kafe, dan Silicon Valley karena universitas dan juga gabungan motivasi intrinsik dan ekstrinsik yang melingkupi banyak pegiat teknologi dan usaha startup disana.

Tetapi ada garis besar yang Weiner berhasil tarik dari tempat-tempat tersebut. Terlepas dari batas geografis dan waktu yang berjarak di antara mereka, tempat-tempat yang berhasil memancing kreativitas dan memunculkan kegeniusan adalah tempat-tempat yang ia sebut memiliki seperangkat karakter 
  Tiga K: Kekacauan, Keragaman, dan Kebijaksanaan.
 Apa maksudnya? Kekacauan diperlukan untuk menciptakan perubahan dari status quo yang melingkupi. Keragaman diperlukan untuk menghubungkan berbagai titik-titik sudut pandang yang muncul dari berbagai latar belakang. Sementara Kebijaksanaan adalah yang melengkapi dua K sebelumnya. Dibutuhkan kebijaksanaan untuk menangkap potensi dari kekacauan dan keragaman yang ada. Ironisnya, menurut Weiner, kebijaksanaan adalah bagian yang paling penting, tetapi paling diabaikan.

Pengabaian akan kebijaksanaan pulalah yang akhirnya menyebabkan tempat-tempat kreatif dan genius sulit untuk direka ulang di tempat yang berbeda. Inggris dan Dubai mencoba meniru Silicon Valley (Inggris dengan Thames Valley dan Dubai dengan Silicon Oasis) tetapi menurut Weiner, secara keseluruhan mereka telah gagal untuk membawa gairah kreatif dari Silicon Valley semata-mata karena mereka menganggap bahwa Silicon Valley hanyalah suatu formula yang bisa dengan mudah diduplikasi. Tetapi cara kerja kreativitas tidak seperti itu. Untuk menjadi kreatif dibutuhkan proses, atau dalam bahasa Weiner, suatu "pengeraman panjang" diantara friksi-friksi dan ketegangan yang ada dari tempat tersebut, dengan latar belakang tempat dan budaya yang juga berbeda dan beragam. Beberapa tidak cukup bijak untuk memahami bahwa kreativitas membutuhkan proses. Membangun kegeniusan butuh proses, sementara beberapa juga tidak cukup sabar untuk menjalani proses tersebut sehingga yang terjadi adalah keterburuan.

Apakah Weiner berhasil menjawab pertanyaan "mengapa" diatas? Ya, dipandang dalam beberapa hal. Lalu sekarang, pertanyaan tersebut kembali kepada kita dalam bahasa yang berbeda. Bagaimana kita memandang kreativitas itu sendiri? Apakah kita masih memandang kreativitas dan kegeniusan sebagai suatu anugerah, sesuatu yang muncul dengan sendirinya karena pengaruh genetis, atau sesuatu yang sebenarnya bisa diusahakan dan diolah? Bagaimana kita memunculkan kreativitas yang kita miliki? Kutipan Weiner ini mungkin bisa menjawabnya:

"Aku bisa mengerti mengapa orang Yunani Kuno sangat senang berjalan. Jalan kaki menenangkan pikiran tanpa benar-benar membungkamnya. Dengan volume yang dikecilkan, kita bisa mendengar diri sendiri lagi."

Weiner menjawabnya dengan kembali kepada kebiasaan bangsa Yunani Kuno. Mendengar diri sendiri mampu memunculkan kebijaksanaan, dan kebijaksanaan adalah barang yang paling dibutuhkan sekaligus paling diabaikan. Padahal apabila kita mau memikirkan, sebenarnya disanalah bibit dari sifat-sifat kreativitas dan kegeniusan muncul. Sejarah sudah membuktikan itu,

Inspired by research done in the Netherlands on the World Database of Happiness (page 7), NPR correspondent and self proclaimed grump Eric Weiner decided to travel to the happiest countries in the world to see if he could figure out the secret of happiness.

Weiner's tour included The Netherlands, Switzerland, Bhutan, Qatar, Iceland, Moldova, Thailand, Great Britain, India and home to the United States (Florida). Like so many recent travelogues the book quickly stops being about the research and becomes a blow by blow account of the journey. When Weiner pulls himself out of the picture and focuses on the culture of the place he's visiting the book is fascinating. Unfortunately, as he becomes more jet lagged he spends more of his time grousing.

The first hundred pages or so are interesting. I especially liked the chapter set in Bhutan and how it contrasted to Qatar. By Iceland, things started to wind down an his observations on human nature began getting repetitive.

I wanted to like this book so badly but I just didn't. Weiner tries to be witty and funny but I find him flat (worse, I was listening to the audiobook and even his voice is pretty monotonous). He goes for self-deprecating but picking on his shortcomings doesn't come off as funny.

He also comes off as resistant to other opinions. He tends to criticize other cultures, especially if their happiness takes a fate or faith driven path. His "grumpiness" rubs off as closeminded, surprising for a travel writer and former journalist. I wasn't impressed, and in fact, was pretty bored by this novel.

The question this book poses also doesn't ever really get answered. Weiner travels to several countries and in each, notes what makes people (both natives and ex-pats) happy but also unhappy. You're left wondering, "What IS the happiest place? Why?" Weiner never seems to present a solution.

You know, I thought this book was going to be complete crap. Through Weiner's comparison of the sorrowed and blissful locales, I was able to better estimate my sense of happiness and let life become more of a game.

Such an awful cliché really, but reading The Geography of Bliss really does kill three birds with one stone. 

1) Eric Weiner digs deep into how geography—and culture—impact happiness. I won't spoil the surprises, but his discoveries are enlightening. 

2) Second is vicarious wandering. Eric gives his readers a taste of ten countries—including, but not limited, to Bhutan, Qatar, Iceland, and Moldova. While he may not cover the typical touristic topics during his visits, you definitely get enough of a sense of each place to know whether to add it to your Bucket List.

3) Third, but not least, is laughter. Eric reminds me of one of my favorite travel-ish writers, J. Maarten Troost, who wrote one of my all-time favorite books—The Sex Lives of Cannibals and another worthy read—Lost on Planet China. Make me laugh and you have my attention—and my heart.

Go get this book. The world needs more happiness.

Full of inspired moments, The Geography of Bliss accomplishes a feat few travel books dare and even fewer achieve: to make you happier.
