Good, short psychological thriller that was quite fun to read. Very interesting characters, and a twist that I should have seen coming but did not. Good writing as well.

A young woman is making a living faking it as a cut-price psychic (with some illegal soft-core sex work on the side). She makes a decent wage mostly by telling people what they want to hear. But then she meets Susan Burke. Susan moved to the city one year ago with her husband and 15-year-old stepson Miles. They live in a Victorian house called Carterhook Manor. Susan has become convinced that some malevolent spirit is inhabiting their home. The young woman doesn't believe in exorcism or the supernatural. However when she enters the house for the first time, she begins to feel it too, as if the very house is watching her, waiting, biding its time . . . The Grownup, which originally appeared as 'What Do You Do?' in George R. R. Martin's Rogues short story anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world's most original and skilled voices in fiction.

I need to find Gillian Flynn so that I can throw up in her purse.

I went into this mouth punch of a story completely blind, not knowing anything of the plot. Which was fine at first. It was bitter, and raw, and very funny. I laughed out loud at the crass honesty of it all. So, imagine my surprise when things went super creepy super fast. And the next thing I knew, I was staring at the last page of the story, feeling like I had been run over by a truck, and suffering a whiplash from all those plot twists.
I am so tired. I need a nap after this one.

Silly goose type beat. The pacing is a bit fast towards the end but it’s got that feel of a thriller movie at the suspenseful moment so.

I enjoyed the story and the fact that it was short, since I think that Gillian Flynn's flaw is that her books drag on and are a bit dull. This one was of course fast-paced since it's so short, and even though the characters are unlikeable, they ar fun to follow.
I loved the first twist, didn't like the second one that much but it was still a good conclusion

This is hands down of the best first lines of a book I have read in literally forever. I had no idea this novella existed, even tho I LOVE GILLIAN FLYNN and her writing style, yeah I was probably living under a rock. But then I saw it on booktube and I HAD TO READ IT. I thought short stories/novellas aren't for me but now I have come to realize I just wasn't reading the right ones.

This book has everything I want in my perfect book: a good sense of humor, complex layering and mystery going on, the jump between thriller and supernatural(you're constantly trying to figure out if it's horror/supernatural or is a mystery thriller and in the best way possible it keeps you glued) and last but not the least: an open ending. I know most people do not like that in their books but when done properly I AM SUCKER FOR IT. This book is perfect in every which way and I am all the more in love with the author because she was able to do all of this in just under 70 pages!!!



I lack formal education. So I'm left with the feeling that I'm smarter than everyone around me but that if I ever got around really smart people—people who went to universities and drank wine and spoke Latin—that they’d be bored as hell by me. It’s a lonely way to go through life.



HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! JUST READ IT. WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BOOK EARLIER??? I'm definitely buying my own copy of this as soon as possible, I LOVE IT SO MUCH! Would I love a full blown story out of this? An expanded version? HELL YES PLEASE!!



But I wasn't a well-read bookworm; I was just a dumb whore in the right library.
