The investigation part of the book dragged on a little long for me, but once it got into the psychoanalysis, I found it fascinating. The author deftly ties together global political events, social norms, the rise of psychoanalysis, and the popularity of spiritualism and paranormal investigation. Some of the connections are Fodor's, but Summerscale enhances and clarifies them in the way she juxtaposes the rise of Hitler with the paranormal investigation. The Haunting of Alma Fielding isn't just about ghosts and poltergeists, it's about how we're all haunted by our pasts, our choices, and the remembrance of the people we once knew, as well as the people we once were.
