I got this book for my Boof of The Month subscription. It was my first historical romance. All the historical romances that I’ve read are all slow burns.
What I like about the book was that there wasn’t any fluff that wasn’t important. Everything whether it was the banter, family dynamics, societal reputation, or ethics gave insight into the FL (August) and ML(Evan) and who they were. 
The banter and tension between August and Evan was what I looked forward to whenever they were in proximity.
August was such a strong woman. She was truly a beacon for the women in her time period. 
Overall the book was enjoyable to read. (PS. There’s a little bit of spice 🌶)

This was fun. I would've liked to have seen Evan fleshed out a little more because there were times he felt very one-note, but I enjoyed him for the most part. I liked the relationship between him and August, and thought they had good banter and chemistry. The ending wrapped up a little too quickly for my tastes, but I enjoyed this nonetheless and will continue the series.

Ahh I was so excited for this book bc the synopsis sounded so good. While I still definitely enjoyed it, I think I was just left a little disappointed by the ending. I loved the beginning, I loved the 75-95% mark, but the middle dragged a little and the end gave me whiplash. I liked all the individual characters a lot, I understood their intentions and reasons behind their actions. I think the pacing ended up being the main downfall.

One thing I liked that a lot of other reviews seemed to not like was August. I loved how much of a staunch feminist she was and her progressiveness for the time. I liked that she was headstrong, smart, and that her intellect really continued to play a part throughout the entire book. Moreover, I felt like she was totally justified in her resistance to marriage. Because we, as readers, see Evan's POV, I think we're more partial to his actions. However, when I put myself in August's shoes, I would be just as frustrated, angry, and upset at my family and Evan (especially in the first half), when he (view spoiler)[ made his intentions known publically and spoke to her family without her consent first  (hide spoiler)]. I felt like she felt like a caged animal from all sides and losing her freedom, and the way she lashed out seemed understandable to me. I just then felt the turn from feeling unhappy about her predicament to the steamy scene at like 85% was just a huge flip. 

Then I thought we would be getting a slow resolution after that point (there was like 20 pages left in the book), but somehow a whole ton of shit happened in the literal last 10 pages of the book that really gave me whiplash. I feel like the last 20 or so pages could have either been cut, or the middle could have been cut to make room for more than 20 pages at the end with better groveling from the hero.

Even though this was like an average romance read for me, I'm still excited to pick up the next book because I want to read about Violet and Leigh's story.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book but the constant antagonism especially with August’s character got a little old. While I understood her reasons for not wanting to marry it seemed like she was absolutely resolute against experiencing anything outside of her own point of view. Evan was great, a little flat but I loved how gone he was for the heroine from the go.

I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I've never read from this author before and really enjoyed the writing style. I liked the main character a lot, She was strong and independent ( as much as she could be anyway). The romance was enjoyable, I liked reading the interactions between the two. Overall a good, quick, and easy read. I would for sure recommend it!

This was a rollercoaster ride I'm in love with. I don't usually read historical rom, but I read the description & picked it up & am sooo happy I did!

August & Evan; two absolutely lovable & different but still same individuals who couldn't find anyone more perfect than each other.

Set in 1875, this is a slow burn romance which will make you smile till your jaws hurt, chuckle, cry few sad & few happy tears, enjoy the banter & love each character. 

The too & fro was entertaining for sure, but when they were together, it was sparks flying everywhere. They had an intense bond which was raw, real & sweet. The library scene where Evan talks about his brother is my favourite. It's so intimate but not in any physical aspect. I was crying the whole scene because they together are goals.♡♡

Apart from them, we have Evan's not so subtle, hounding future mother in law. His reactions to her are hilarious. **chuckles**

The ending, well, I wanted to punch both of them, August only once but Evan twice but my love for them stopped me & I'm so happy. 

I cannot stress how good this is. The writing style is completely at ease making me feel like I'm reading any non-historical book

I throughly enjoyed The Heiress Gets a Duke! The Netflix series Bridgerton has blown up and this book is a great read for anyone who fell in love with the series. I loved seeing a woman of the 1800s who saw more to life then finding a husband. August was a businesswomen who had her own thoughts and opinions so wasn’t afraid to voice them. The Duke was likable, he showed is vulnerability to not only the reader but the August as well. 

The book built up Maxwell as a savior but in the end he really didn’t do anything. Felt that the buildup was a letdown. I liked Violet, she was a great confidant to August. The Crenshaws were a bit cringe-worthy at times. 

Overall I really enjoyed the book and looking forward to the second book later this year.

3.5 stars! I loved the beginning – it had one of the best meet-cutes I've read. I enjoyed the main characters and the romance but the story did stall during the middle which is why I can't give this a full 4 stars.
