After reading "The Lost Hero" it was a great relief to be back with Percy. On top of that, during this book he is just...EPIC!

PERCY IS CONFUSED. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn't know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn't ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth.

HAZEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD. When she lived before, she didn't do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem—when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her "gift" for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn't say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wishes she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.

As is my Goal for Any Series I start this year, I need to continue until I finish or decide it’s not for me and after loving Book 1I was super excited to dive right into book 2 and what a rite this book was full of twists, turns and adventure right from the world go!

Percy Jackson is back but he's in another camp of demigods, the Camp Jupiter. He's with the other demigods while having a retrograde amnesia. Hazel Levesque is a dead daughter of Hades but is resurrected for redemption. Frank Zhang is a shapeshifter and is an unexpected son of Ares. These three embark on a quest as far as Alaska to rescue the God of Death from an arrogant giant, Alcyoneus

It’s clear just how much passion Rick Riordan has in terms of writing and brings his characters to life on the page. Though the demigods face otherworldly situations, they manage to seem like actual people you could meet on the street one day (and then immediately forget because the Mist is funny like that). I'm so glad to read another book about Percy and loved how far he has come since The Lightning Thief.

I loved getting to know the two new characters though, Hazel and Frank. Both characters are flawed, riddled with their own insecurities, secrets and longings. But they both also possess amazing (and quite stunning) abilities that come into play quite often during their quest. It's quite heartwarming to get to know them, watch them mature and experience their crazy quest with them.

I can't wait to see where he takes us next with this series.

So, yeah, I'm excited. This book is so Epic, I would give it the title of The Most Epic Book Ever. Unfortunately, I already gave that title to Insurgent. So I suppose we'll just have to settle for The Most Epic Book of ALL TIME.

So, yes, I got very annoyed at Nico in this book. Hello? Aren't you supposed to be friends with Percy? or at least Allies? At least acquaintances? And he shows up all amnesiac and is like, "Hey, I think I know you," but then you're like, "Nope. never seen you before in my life." Is it still the Bianca thing?
Either way, Nico is sooo getting seriously strangled the next time I see him.
Hazel: Her story is a lot like Piper's from book 1, except, you know, completely different.
Frank: Oh, this kid is so awesome I can't even begin to say. Unfortunately, I'm in a committed relationship with Leo... Not that I'd actually date him, anyway. He and Hazel are too perfect of a couple to break up. I'm sure Aphrodite agrees with me.

I live twenty miles away from Camp Jupiter, the Roman half-blood camp that Percy Jackson finds himself at in The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan. While it's not the first time Riordan has set one of his adventures in the Bay Area, it's the closet to home the adventures have ever come. A previous book, The Titan's Curse, is centered on Mount Tamalpais, a prominent feature of the North Bay.

I don't know how accurate or humorous Camp Half Blood's placement somewhere on Long Island is. I've only been there once. The area above and around the Caldecott Tunnel (highway 24 as it runs between Berkeley/Oakland and Orinda/Moraga) strikes me as a hilarious place to hide both Camp Jupiter and the newest rendition of Rome. Currently the tunnel is getting a fourth bore to free up traffic but now I've taken to thinking of it as the secret entrance to the camp. Why not?

Like Jason in The Lost Hero, Percy Jackson remembers his name but not much else. He's driven by unseen forces to the opening of Camp Jupiter, where he meets an old woman and passes the test necessary to gain entrance. There he is befriended by two odd balls — Hazel and Frank. Hazel has a huge secret she's hiding and an equally large chip on her shoulder. Frank is a klutz and so far hasn't been claimed by his father.

As is always the case in Riordan's fantasies, there is a ticking countdown to world disaster if the brave heros can't finish their quest. The quest this time takes Percy, Hazel and Frank northwards. As ever, the adventure is a romp, full of crazy gods and monsters.
It's a fun and quick read. I'm looking forward to reading The Mark of Athena.

Ahhh it's been so long since I've read a Rick Riordan book and it's been years since I read The Lost Hero, but it's so good to return to this series. As always, Riordan writes a gripping, hilarious, action-packed novel with plenty of surprises, sacrifices, and sarcasm.

I honestly don't have much to complain about. Though, that may be because I've been absolutely starved for good non-academic reading lately and my standards are significantly lower. I love the diversity of the characters (Frank's Chinese!! Yay representation! His story's super cool), and learning about how the Roman camp worked in comparison to Camp Half Blood was interesting.

I haven't read anything by Rick Riordan that's really disappointed me thus far, so.. Mark of Athena, here I come?!

first off, the cover!!!!!! one of the coldest covers in the riordanuniverse. seeing percy’s first chapter had me so hyped when i was younger, and the feeling is still mutual 10 years later. the percabeth angst was killing me, bc it’s the fact that percy didn’t even really know who he was but remembered that annabeth and that she was someone who he really loved AH. he is the standard by all means, the blueprint for real. i like the new characters and all in this series, but nothing will ever top the og’s
