I didn’t expect this book to affect me as heavily as it did. I LOVED this book. I loved reading about Mark’s journey, both literal and mental. There was something so simple and heartbreaking about the writing and I just feel like I really connected with his voice. This is a small book but it holds so much meaning. It didn’t feel like “one of those cancer books” to me. It was different and I really enjoyed it.

The Honest Truth is a good book. It teaches some solid lessons about friendship, how people touch each other in little ways, what matters in life, and wanting to live, written in a manner that is appropriate for younger readers. 

I would describe the writing as easy (but not immature). I read this book so quickly! This is the kind of book that can be read in one sitting without losing any of the details. The plot progresses quickly and it's also very straightforward. The kid wants to climb a mountain. This is just the story of how he gets there - and how he comes back.

This is a very good middle-grade novel, but I am disappointed in how Jessie's dilemma was handled. I am guessing that it was Wesley who ended up calling the tip line, and not her. Although true friendship may be to keep a secret, Jessie knew from the start where Mark was going and knew exactly what could happen to him if he got there. Sure, she wants to honor her best friend's "last wish". Mark believed it was his last wish because he thought that he was going to die, although he definitely had a chance of getting better with treatment. Since this was the case, Jessie could have been allowing a suicide. That was extremely irresponsible of her as a character, and I find it even more irresponsible to paint that off as "You're the best, best friend!! I love you!" Friendship is very sweet, but this was a problem for me throughout the book.

(I would also say that I couldn't really feel the connection between Jessie and Mark, but since this is a novel about kids, and kids form random friendships, I'll roll with it.)

Apart from that, The Honest Truth was a heart-warming novel. It is a great quick read for older readers, and a meaningful read for younger readers. It's not earth-shatteringly enlightening, but it's a cute book and a good story.

Im Gepäck seine Kamera, sein Notizbuch und einen Plan, wie der den Gipfel von Mount Rainier erreichen kann. Und wenn es das letzte ist, was er tut. Eine Geschichte über einen Jungen, der einen Berg besteigt und über ein Mädchen, das zurückbleibt. Eine Geschichte über große Fragen und kleine Augenblicke. Meine Meinung: Die wirkliche Wahrheit ist eines dieser kurzen Bücher, bei denen man sich anfangs fragt, ob die Geschichte auf den wenigen Seiten überhaupt Platz hat. Später weiß man, dass diese Sorge unbegründet war und ist traurig, dass die Geschichte so schnell zu Ende ging. 
Die wirkliche Wahrheit erzählt die Geschichte von Mark. So steht es im Klappentext. Man darf jedoch nicht vergessen, dass auch zwei andere maßgeblich beteiligt sind. Seine beste Freundin Jessie und seine Hündin Beau. Beide habe ich sogar noch ein wenig mehr ins Herz geschlossen, als Mark. Denn Mark ist manchmal zu egoistisch und Jessie und Beau sind treu und aufopferungsvoll. Besonders Beau machte die Geschichte für mich zu etwas besonderem, denn sie ist der tollste Buchhund, den ich kenne und Marks Geschichte ist einfach erzählenswert.
Den Mark ist krank. Er hat Krebs und glaubt fest daran, dass er sterben wird. Und er tut das, was er vor seinem Tod tun will: Er haut von zu Hause ab, um auf den Mount Rainier zu steigen. Und das obwohl er dringend eine Behandlung bräuchte. Liest man seine Geschichte, dann schwankt man zwischen Sorge und Bewunderung. Es ist ein ganz eigenartiges Gefühl, das so entsteht und man will unbedingt wissen, ob dieses Abenteuer gut für Mark endet.
Besonders regt es jedoch auch zum Nachdenken an. Über uns und unser Leben. Über das, was wir uns ihm machen können und ständig schwebt die Gewissheit über uns, dass wir nicht unsterblich sind und nur begrenzt Zeit haben, unsere Träume zu erfüllen. Ich finde es beeindruckend, wie viel dieses doch recht kurze Buch bewirken kann und welche Fülle von Gefühlen und Erkenntnisse es im Gegensatz zu anderen Krebsbüchern schafft. Der Krebs wird hier nebensächlich und trotzdem bleiben die Sorgen die gleichen. Wenn ihr mich fragt, hat Dan Gemeinhart hier etwas Wundervolles geschaffen. 
Fazit: Die wirkliche Wahrheit ist ein beeindruckendes Buch, das zutiefst berührt. Endlich mal ein Krebsbuch, indem der Krebs nicht im Vordergrund steht. Eine wundervolle beste Freundin und der wohl tollste Buchhund runden diese Geschichte ab und machen sie absolut lesenswert.

Finally! A book that broke my unfortunate streak of average blah books. This book did so in a big way. Recently I have become a huge fan of Gemeinhart and if I had not already, this book would have made me one. 
With such a short powerful book, I cannot say too much in the review without giving anything away.
Read this book. It might make you cry but you need to read it.
