I read this when I was in middle school, and I'm not the biggest fan of sci-fi books but this one! Oh this one!! I'm thinking of revisiting it and experiencing the book again but whew! There's so much! A whole world with all the characters so carefully written and thought of Nancy Farmer is amazing! This book is huge and it was one of those books you just fall into and you can feel yourself walking with the characters side by side.

Read it in hardly a day. So good! and so real. Normally science fiction takes you into a very supernatural, unorthodox realm with crazy characters whose personalities take wild extremes. But in this book everything and everyone is so normal in a sickening and warm way (depending on the character) It kept me thinking until the very end.

I'd give this one a solid 3.5 stars, but I lean toward 3 because I never really fell in love with the main character.

This book has some very good concepts, but the plot of the story is very slow to reveal itself despite extremely heavy foreshadowing. Many of the characters seem unequipped to see the meaning behind the events in their lives and I found that to be a bit frustrating. However, the book does flow very well and I was able to read this in a single several hour sitting with only short breaks. The writing is very well done. I do feel as though the characters could have used more fleshing out. This isn't a book where I fell truly in love with any of the characters and that's always unfortunate, but it does do a very good job of even showing that those we consider evil are not alway completely evil, even if they have done unspeakably horrible things in their lives.

           En sehr gutes Buch mit sehr guten Ideen, allerdings hätte sich die Autorin etwas mehr Zeit nehmen sollen, die Geschichte in Ruhe auszubauen. Sie hätte sehr gut eine Trilogie aus ihren Ideen machen können. Das Ende kommt zu plötzlich und passt nicht so recht zum ersten Teil der Erzählung. Nichtsdestotrotz: sehr lesenswert!

I don't think you can realize how truly amazing this book is until you finish it. The characters, plot, etc were perfect. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because it was slow.
