Seventeen-year-old Gene has passed as a vampire for years, carefully following every rule, but now, just as he finds a girl worth fighting for, he is chosen to participate in the hunt for the last remaining humans among ruthless vampires who soon suspect his true nature.

My thoughts from 2021:

You know what? Imma agree with 2013 me, this is very original as far as takes on vampires go. I think Kagawa's Immortal Rules might take a similar tack as far as "world wherein vampires are the dominant race" but I don't really remember it that well so I don't know.

Gene is a human, or a heper as he calls himself, living amongst people, or vampires. It's a complicated ruse that consumes most of his thoughts—he must shave and shower daily, he imitates their body language while suppressing his own, he tries as hard as possible to not draw attention to himself. These rules were drilled into him by his father, who got careless and died for it seven years ago.

Gene's ruse begins to fall apart, however, when he is selected by lottery to participate in the decennial "heper hunt" along with six others, one of whom is his classmate, Ashley June. Gene and Ashley June and the other hunters are whisked away to the Heper Studies where they will spend five days training to hunt the hepers—the last remaining hepers known of. When I say "whisked" I mean "whisked"—Gene is given no time to go home and get his deodorant or toothpaste or water, and without these he'll be found out within days. 

As the nights go on, Gene is plagued as his growing odor sets the other hunters and people at the Institute off, as well as his own dehydration. Gene eventually finds a solution by going to the Heper colony during the day—they have water there, and he can drink and bathe.

Gene's struggle is between what's true of him, and what he thinks should be true of him.theres a reason he's never pursued a relationship with Ashley June and it's not just that, for a heper like him, a relationship with a person would be inevitably fatal. It's that he is a heper. An animal almost.

Disgust pulls their faces down as they step aside, but that's okay. I'm used to it, that look.
It's the way I look at myself when I'm alone at home.
You live too long trying not to be something, you end up hating that thing.

Gene's cognitive dissonance is the focal point of this story, his urge to live and his disgust at his own life. When he goes to the heper colony he is surprised to learn that these other hepers are as intelligent as him, but he still sets himself apart from them, lying to them even as he participates in their singing. 

His revelation of his own name is a turning point after which he must learn to know himself, as a heper. (view spoiler)[The revelation that Ashley June is a heper as well spurs on his acceptance* of himself. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I say "acceptance" because I can't think of another word, but Gene's relationship with himself is still, I think, very fraught when this book ends. But he does want to help the other hepers, instead of just himself and that's progress soooo (hide spoiler)]

Gene es un niño humano o heper que sobrevive entre la raza dominante, que se asemejan a los vampiros, aparentando ser uno de ellos. Gene está solo, no sabe si hay más como él y toda su familia ha muerto.
El gobernador anuncia que va a ver una "Caza" que consiste en que un grupo de personas de la ciudad serán elegidos al azar y los mandaran cerca de un desierto donde soltaran a un grupo de hepers para que ellos, la raza dominante, se los coman. El que come más gana y obviamente Gene sale como uno de los elegidos para esta caza enfermiza de su propia especie.
No sé realmente si me gustó o no, pero aun así le doy tres estrellas por el hecho de que me tuviera el día leyendo.
La historia es una mezcla de vampiros con una pizca de los juegos del hambre, nada muy original. 
Lo que me gustó fue sabía que el protagonista, Gene, iba a vivir pero no sabía como podría encontrar la solución a ciertos problemas.
La otra protagonista que me gustó fue Ashley June, no es tonta y hace cosas que me dejaron totalmente pasmada.

¿Por qué? ¿Por qué? Yo quería que volviera por Ashley June, no me caía mal, arriesgo todo por Gene y ahora está sola y atrapada a sabiendas que no puede vivir por que o muere de deshidratación o de hambre o si sale se la comen los raros ¿Por qué?
Me cae bien Sissy, no es tonta y tiene un gran instinto. Sabe en quién confiar y es simpática, ame la parte en que le tiró a Gene su ropa interior en una flecha, no pare de reír.
Gene ¿que puedo decir de él? No me parece muy sensato(lo odio por lo de Ashley June aunque sé que él no podía hacer nada) y por otra parte es valiente e inteligente,sabe como sobrevivir y como atacar a la raza dominante.
