AMAZING BOOK. There is no other way to say it.
not only is this a Vampire book, but it's a vampire book unlike any I have ever read before, because it is a vampire story within a dystopia. Yeah, that's awesome.
And, call me crazy, but the first major act in the book, when Allie 'died' made her character believable to me. You see, most people have these convictions and walk around preaching them and feeling so strongly about them. You probably do that. You prbably don't say you'd die for these convictions, but on the off chance that you do, what if you were actually faced with a situation, and life-or-death situation, and if you let those convictions crumble, you'd live? It's a sad thing to say, a hard thing to admit, but you know, I'd live. Allie did the same thing. faced with death, her convictions crumbled and she lived. This made her believable because we all know of those people who DIDN'T let their convictions crumble, and seem larger than life, like they're not real people. A couple examples are Socrates and Joan of Arc.
yeah, those people? Our main character, Allie, isn't one of them.
And surprisingly, it was only after becoming a vampire that she became more human, if your definition of human involves the word 'caring'. mine does.

Overall, an amazing book, and I can't wait for the next one.
Oh, and, Julie Kagawa has impressed me so much with only the first books in both her series (I have only read The Iron King and The Immortal Rules. I am going to read the other Iron Fey, but haven't gotten ahold of them from the library yet) But, I have been so impressed with those two that I've read, she now resides among MY FAVORITE AUTHORS. You'd think that wouldn't be a hard club to get in, considering how I rate books, but it's actually pretty Exclusive.

This is a post-apocalyptic vampire series. I have no idea what enticed me to read this book but damn am I glad that I did. The beginning is a little slow but that's just us getting introduced to the characters and the world that this story is set in. I mean, there are so many vampire books out there, I think the collective thought that everyone had when this came out was, "Another one!?" You can't really blame us though, the amount of cheesy vampire love stories there are out is ridiculous. But not this one! This was a refreshing post-apocalyptic novel about a girl trying to survive and preserve humanity against the vampires that now rule the land. Allison lives in a vampire city where she scavenges for food and survives against the vampires and the rabids, humans and creatures that have been turned and go crazy with bloodlust instead. Long story short, one night on a dangerous supply run she had to fight for her life saving her friends. After dying and accepting the choice to become the one thing she hates, she has to pass as human to survive on the outside and try to save humanity from the rabid disease that is threatening humans and vampires lives together. 

The characters in this book are just amazing! I really found myself loving the amount of detail in their personalities, it made it very believable. Kanin, even after reading all the books, is still my favourite. For his strength, willpower, wiseness, and the list can go on. Allison respected him and I found myself respecting him as well. Kanin is the perfect leader; ruthless, gruesome, hard, and tough. She definitely had to work her butt off just to keep up with him training her. Kanin is a huge character in general for this world, he also is a huge player when it comes to the pre-apocalyptic and post- apocalyptic world. Allison, being new to vampirism, needed Kanin's help to adjust but quickly showed her strength and independence on how she handled herself and the ability to make smart decisions. A theme with Kagawa's writing is that she is not afraid to be explicitly detailed about violence and death, which I thank her for. I welcomed it with open arms because it really added to the 'realness' of the story and made me believe I was there living beside Allison in this horrible world. Also, can we just talk about Allison's katana, like damn! Fierce katana wielding vampire alert! 

The romance in this novel, however, is not fierce nor alert worthy lol sorry. Kagawa KNOWS how to do romance, its pretty evident in her Iron Fey series, which were amazing btw. The romance for some people were great and yeah I guess it could be but I was so not focused on that aspect. I loved the gory, death parts and I didn't want this to be a YA paranormal love story, you know? Which btw, it wasn't! Again, there was romance but it wasn't overpowering, thank god! Zeke was the main love interest, he is, as expected, human and hates vampires. He is the only one that does accept her, even under her false pretence of being human, when everyone doesn't trust the new outsider (Allison). He really is the innocent type that had his view points about vampires turned to hatred because of his 'adopted' (?) father, Jeb. Ugh. Lets not talk about how wrong Jeb is about his perception of vampires and the world in general. Lets just say that he implements his ideas into Zeke and not in a nice way. One thing I did like about the romance aspect was that Allison wasn't whiny or consumed by her love for Zeke. Lets be honest, whiny protagonists in love are the worst! Im glad she wasn't that at all, she always had her mission at the front of her priorities, THANK YOU KAGAWA.

This is definitely a must-read and many can attest to that! Go out and buy it, please!!! 5 Stars!!!

First of all I never expected this to be so good. I love dystopia and vampires, so when I heard that Julie Kagawa had combined the two I was intrigued to see it. In the past Julie Kagawa somehow managed to make me truly love her Iron Fey series. Which is a big step for me considering I'm not a very big fan of very the fey. And now she seems to have re-invented the vampire for me. 

On the surface she seems to have used all of the same old vampire myths but has made them seem so much more complex. 

I adored Allison because she felt like a real person, even when she was a vampire. All of the other characters were also very real. That's what made this book for me. Also Kanin because he was just awesome.

The world Kagawa built was brutal, honest and really brought out the worst in people. Yet Allison managed to make the best of herself even being the one thing she hated the most.

Although the beginning was slow, I ended up really enjoying this. To be honest, I'm getting a little sick with vampires. But Allison was such a kick-ass character, that it was enjoyable to read. Zeke was super adorable, and although he wasn't a main character (yet) it was super cool to see his character grow. It's a good thing that the whole series is out though, because I need the next one now!

Whoa. I'm starting out with the last word that escaped my mouth as I read the end of The Immortal Rules. I was so blown away by the entire package that Julie Kagawa presented, that I couldn't even form a coherent thought upon finishing. Let's be honest, I'm a vampire lover. Always have been, always will be. Allison's story hooked me instantly. The gritty, dystopian and vampire-run world that she introduced me to felt so real. I didn't read this book, I devoured it.

Allison Sekemoto is, in a word, fierce. Living in a world where she must fight to survive, Allison isn't afraid to stand up for herself. I fell in love with her sarcasm and wit. Even before she is turned you quickly find out that this is not a girl that you want to mess with. What really drew me in though was Allison's constant internal battle over becoming a vampire. She chooses her path willingly, and yet refuses to fall headfirst into the world that she hated so blatantly beforehand. Watching Allison fight her inner demons is fascinating, and it makes her that much more likable.

In case you are worrying about the rest of the characters though, I can assure you that they are all just as vivid and well fleshed out as Allison! This I loved. Hands down, Kanin was my favorite. I won't spoil at all, but let's just say that I was eager for more of him. I know that this is the first in the series, and his time is coming. Coming in a close second was Zeke, who becomes a very important part of Allison's existence. This is a boy who totally stole my heart. It's hard not to fall for the chemistry between these two. However it was also so refreshing to see that Allison could keep her own identity at the same time. Thank you so much Julie Kagawa for giving us a girl who can be in love, but still take care of herself!

I could honestly go on for pages about how much I truly enjoyed this book. The Immortal Rules just proves to me that Julie Kagawa can write anything she sets her mind to. Her storytelling is fantastic. Her characters are vivid and wonderful. Even the setting comes to life on its own. I cannot say enough about how amazing it all is. This book is over 400 pages, but it is an effortless read. The story blends into such seamless chapters that you'll find yourself having read well past where you meant to stop. Long story short, I am putting this book on my favorites list for the year! Definitely give this one a read.

Audiobook Review:

4.5 stars!

Yep, silly me… this was DEFINITELY one of those books that should have been read a longggg time ago. I can’t believe it took me so long to read it! I think this just may be the first vampire book I’ve read since Twilight. And I have to say… I love vampires. No, they didn’t sparkle (hehe, thanks Jen!), but man did they leave an impression on me!

The dark world Kagawa creates is remarkable. It never ceases to amaze me how certain authors possess that extremely unique gift of creating a world within a story that is so lifelike it’s impossible not to feel firsthand as though you’re right there alongside the characters. I’m sure the fact that I chose to go the audio route with this one really helped as well. There’s nothing like a wonderful narrator performing a story (that’s already written wonderfully) to make you feel like a part of it. I was completely engrossed in this story. The action, the fear, the excitement… I felt it all!

The Immortal Rules is another story where I can say what a joy it was to read with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. This came out last year, and though I can’t to read it then, for whatever reason I didn’t. So now, over a year later, I started this book, not having read reviews or the synopsis, and I truly believe that made the story that much better. I didn’t know what was going to happen next, I was thrown for a loop more than once, and I the pounding of my heart had to be audible (at least to any vampires nearby) at that rate. I loved it!

The characters… perfect. Allie was a total kick-ass heroine, my very favorite type. No, she didn’t always make the right decisions… and sometimes I wanted to smack her. But man, was she a tough one! I love a strong, tough girl that can hold her own. The secondary characters were without a doubt just as striking as Allie. Plummer did an impeccable job as narrator performing the characters’ unique personalities.

If you haven’t started this series yet, I suggest you do. That is, as long as you like vampires and tough girls kicking some major booty! I’m always happy when I start a series a little late because the second book is already out, and I WILL be reading The Eternity Cure ASAP!
