This is how a historical fiction should be written! I did not know how I would like this book going in since it was published in 1955, I usually read books that were published in this last decade. Now I will never fear what a book is like just because of the year of publication. This book was filled with drama that could appeal to any generation. My favorite character in this book was Guccio, I felt as though he was like any teenager today, finding out what they want in life and sometimes getting hopes up and then having those dreams crushed, a quote from page 153, "Now Guccio began to understand that fortune does not smile upon young men as it does in fairy tales." From this quote we can learn that life is not a fairy tale. This book was a fairly simple read but the reason I gave it a four star over a five star review is that you should know a little bit of French history before going in. I did hear about this book before of the hit series, Game of Thrones, I can completely see where George R.R. Martin got inspiration for his series. Some scenes in this book instantly remind me of things I had watched or read in the GOT series. Overall, this was a great book and I cannot wait to continue this series.
