Very cute and imagitive middle grade book. I am very much looking forward to continuing the series and reading more from Nicki Thorton in the future. The book really reminded me of Harry Potter and a bit of Disk World where your thrown into the thick of these situations without much context. I really enjoyed it.

I wanted much more from this book. It was okay and entertaining enough, but it just didn't keep my attention like middle grade usually does. I think it had too much going on with the magic, murder, culinary aspects and needed to focus on just one thing. Overall, I liked the writing style so I might continue with the series.

This was enjoyable but didn't bring me the magical feeling I get when reading other middle grades. I liked the characters but never really loved Seth, he annoyed me a few times and I got a little frustrated. The plot was good, the idea solid but it just didn't pull me in as I was hoping. I am glad to have read it though.
