The Last Chance Library

Freya Sampson2021
A Library Reads Pick June Jones emerges from her shell to fight for her beloved local library, and through the efforts and support of an eclectic group of library patrons, she discovers life-changing friendships along the way. Lonely librarian June Jones has never left the sleepy English village where she grew up. Shy and reclusive, the thirty-year-old would rather spend her time buried in books than venture out into the world. But when her library is threatened with closure, June is forced to emerge from behind the shelves to save the heart of her community and the place that holds the dearest memories of her mother. Joining a band of eccentric yet dedicated locals in a campaign to keep the library, June opens herself up to other people for the first time since her mother died. It just so happens that her old school friend Alex Chen is back in town and willing to lend a helping hand. The kindhearted lawyer's feelings for her are obvious to everyone but June, who won't believe that anyone could ever care for her in that way. To save the place and the books that mean so much to her, June must finally make some changes to her life. For once, she's determined not to go down without a fight. And maybe, in fighting for her cherished library, June can save herself, too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, far more than I was anticipating (if you read my reviews, you can see I have struggled enjoyed some of the more recent novels I’ve read). This book is just plain cute. June and a rag-tag cast of characters take it upon themselves to save the library. The characters are all so unique and likeable, I found all of them impressively developed and written. Kudos to Sampson on her character development. I loved how they worked as a community to try to save the library. It was just a neato story. The only, tiny, miniscule thing that bothered me was Alex. While the synopsis claims the entire town was aware he had a thing for June, I just didn’t find that to be the case. He was polite to her, but it never seemed like he was falling all over himself and his crush on her. I was expecting a budding romance and that’s not at all what happened. It in NO way detracts from the story, it was just something that I wish had been a bigger part of the story. It’s a great, feel-good book.

Cute enough. Took me a while to get into it. The main character is painfully shy and self-deprecating which is sort of the point I guess, but didn't make it a very enjoyable read for me. I enjoyed it more once I was about 20% in but I never really felt the romance much.

This is a sweet book. The library patrons are great and I always love books with lots of book references. June, the mc, is figuring out who she wants to be after many years of being stagnant. She’s a bit frustrating at times but in an understandable way. I love Alex and would have liked a bit more of him.

I didn’t even go into this one with high expectations and yet I was still let down? The MC was meek to the point that she might as well not have even been in the book, and though the story itself was fine, it felt lacking.

Thank you so much to Berkley for sending the ARC to me in exchange for an honest review! I love the sense of community around books and the dedication to keep their library open! This is definitely a book for book lovers! Most of the characters were lovable and relatable while others were a bit predictable. I would have loved to see a bit more about June, our main character, and dive more into her personal experiences and feelings rather than just scratching the surface of her social anxiety. We learned more about some characters than we did June herself. I also felt like some things came a bit too easy for June in the story or there just wasn’t enough detail explaining some events which made it seem glazed over. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the characters and would definitely recommend!

A cute story about a library but nothing extraordinary. The characters are not unique and lack the charm that would make me not care about the cliches. I didn't find the main heroine's inner journey to be that realistic. The romance is uncompelling though it's not that important because it's on the back burner for most of the story. It's fun fluff but most likely won't create a lasting impression or the desire to revisit it.
