I just finished so these are my initial impressions without time to reflect. 

One thing that stands out is the author's use of such wide and rare vocabulary. I consider myself well-read and to have a pretty above average lexicon for my age and nationality. But I had to look up about one word a chapter, on average. Words like "gamine" and "apposite" popped out of the text. There is a character-driven reason behind this usage, it seems, so I guess it is justified. But I wonder if this is common in Duncan's other works. 

The story is told from a limited first-person perspective, which for me toned down the drama even while ostensibly intense things were happening. There were some climactic action-oriented moments in the book, but I mostly didn't feel too scared or tense. I mention scared because this is a werewolf book, and it actually was in the horror section at Barnes and Noble. I'm not a horror fan at all, but I do like fantasy and fantastical creatures. Werewolves more than vampires, cuz they're fuzzy animals. 😜

The genre is interesting as well because it is sort of a 'literary' book, with lots of deep reflections and observations about life, while also being completely woven of supernatural plot elements. 

There were at least two sections of the book where the story slowed down and I felt like it was a slog to get through, I won't say why because then I'd have to mark spoilers. 

But mostly I was at least mildly interested to continue seeing how things went, if not outright eager. I spent a few hours-long stretches immersed, and did finish in just a few days.

Overall I wouldn't say this book is "can't miss" by any means (some of the philosophical musings border on cliche at times, even if they are worded in a novel manner), but it's also not a bad choice by any means either. You could do a lot worse than this and probably would with most airport book store junk.

First of all, I only bought this book because it was on my wish-list after having seen it on a list someplace. It sounded ok in the synopsis, and then it was a Kindle .99¢ book of the day. Anyway, it started off promising enough then took an entirely unexpected turn towards "her moist hand lingered next to my quickly stiffening cock" territory. Every 5 or 6 pages this happened. One of these moments stands out in particular. Two characters are sharing an emotional moment while on the run from people who are trying to kill them (this is not a spoiler because the book is called "The Last Werewolf" and if you think it's about just one werewolf on the beach in Mexico drinking blender drinks then you are bad at books.) In any case, it was a genuinely touching scene where the first character emotionally explains the ups and downs of their life to the second character, who listens compassionately then slips their finger into the first character's anus, BEFORE the first one is even done lamenting.
 
The werewolf stuff was decent, but the cock and cunt filled sex scenes (and there were a great cocking many of these cunting scenes) were anus-fingeringly silly. Cock. Don't bother.

The story is told from Jake Marlow’s perspective as he writes in his diary. He’s just found out that he is the last of his kind and after being alive for 200 years, he can’t see much sense in continuing to live. Unfortunately there are at least two groups who want to keep him alive for their own purposes, and will do anything to make that happen.

The book is well written, and although the story is at times is graphic in both the sex scenes and the killing, it is a werewolf and that’s what they do. Kill, Eat, and Have Sex (although that is not the term used). As the reader you like Jake Marlow, and his dry sarcastic wit. You want him to come out on top.

This is a werewolf for adults story.
