I loved this!! Could not put it down and towards the end devoured it while trembling with anticipation and emotion. The start of a series??? Oh, I fervently hope so!!!

This one was very interesting! A mix between typical ghost story in the dark manor and a murder mystery, which I surprisngly enjoyed.
The whole book has the gloomy vibes, not only because of the dark secrets of the house, but because of the setting in WWI. Some sad stories and some trauma.
It was definitely haunting and well-written. It was definitely different to what I expected, but in a good way. Not the usual ghost story only, definitely has more to it and some of the aspects were very creepy in the non-paranormal way, as there was also the raw reality behind the haunting of the house.
I really liked the subtle feminism. The main heroine was definitely a bit too "daring" to fit in the usual books about this era, but I actually liked it. She had some real emotions and I felt them with her, too whenever there was injustice involved.

So definitely liked it and would recommend for the autumn.

I won the paperback ARC in a giveaway and I have to say I wasn't expecting it to be a five star read. 
The pacing and writing was fantastic and I read this in two sittings, because I needed to know what happened. It's not a short book either - 450 pages, however I flew through it.
It's easy enough to connect with the characters and all their different motifs made sense.
I tried to love Laura Purcell's gothic novels, but Anita Frank did a way better job in my opinion, not only focusing on a dark gothic atmosphere, but giving us characters to root and care for as well as a compelling mystery.
I can highly recommend this and I'm excited to read more of this author.
