Reading this in 2020 I found it interesting but not enjoyable literature to read. The only reason I would recommend reading this is for a period study. Lots could be said about class, race, feminism, colonialism, marriage etc of the late Victorian / early Edwardian era as portrayed in this book. Most of it I actually think was intentional, to provoke readers, particularly regarding marriage, people (then and now) start off thinking it would be a romance and instead find it entirely unromantic. But now it's just outdated, plodding, the gothic horror part in the middle carried the story along but at the same time didn't quite fit with beginning or end. Like I said it's interesting which is why I finished it but not enjoyable - I won't be rereading this in the future or recommending this.
