The Odyssean theme gained in prominence after Kubrick gave Clarke a copy of Joseph Campbell's influential book,

Campbell's thesis was that, no matter where one looks for narrative inspiration, or in what language tales are told, they adopt one of a handful of primordial structures, based on psychological archetypes common to all humanity. A hero is one whose life of peace and harmony is disrupted by troubles. They must journey through a dangerous landscape, discover his courage and humility, and resolve the crisis. "He ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man," Campbell wrote.
