Mia isn't currently dating anyone and doesn't know how to go about finding a date; she'd rather focus on Math Team, Swim Team, and documentaries. Her BFFs, though, love rom-coms and have a plan.

Like Mia, I'm not much of rom-com watcher. When I watch romantic comedies I tend to go for the old school screwballs. I haven't seen any of the films Mia watches — although I've heard of a handful of them. So like Mia, I learned that "meet-cute" is the plot device where the couple first meets and are set on their path towards an eventual happily ever after.

A super adorable, POC-led YA novel that not only talks about rom-coms, but serial killers?! The Meet-Cute Project is a fun, light, and heartwarming novel that tackles change, identity, and romance. While the plot is a little predictable and the characters a bit much, Richardson did an amazing job at creating real characters that you'll be rooting for.

Trigger warnings: Manipulative family member

The Meet-Cute Project was simply so refreshing. While I love so many rom-com tropes, I love it even more when the characters aren’t white. There’s something so powerful in seeing authors reinvent these tropes and genres. I loved how joyful The Meet-Cute Project was too; while a little stressful at times (okay, maybe I’m just impatient), it was a generally happy story. 

The entire time I was reading this, I kept thinking about how it reminded me of She Loves Me. While some of this book was predictable, I didn’t find myself minding at all. In fact, the predictability was what made it good. I loved the call back to other rom-coms as well, and I’ll be sure to add the ones I haven’t already watched to my watch list.


Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast and fun read, especially one that is filled with only the kind of joy that rom-com movies can bring to you. A wonderful debut for Richardson, and I cannot wait to see what she writes next!

This was a cute YA romance contemporary. I thought the idea of creating your own meet-cute was a fun idea. I did enjoy the main character, she felt relatable and real. The only thing that really made me enjoy this book less was the main character's sister. This is completely a personal thing. I just didn't care for the sister, I felt that she was rude, unreasonable, and didn't care about her sister's feelings. I felt that she made too many opinions that she should've had no input on and demanded too much of her sister's time. As I said, this is a me thing. The writing was good and kept me invested, and honestly, I read this book in one sitting. Overall a very cute and adorable read. I would for sure recommend it if you're wanting a fun, easy, and fluffy read!
