The Merry Spinster

The Merry Spinster Tales of Everyday Horror

A collection of darkly playful stories based on classic folk and fairy tales (but with a feminist spin) that find the sinister in the familiar and the familiar in the alien—from Mallory Ortberg, author of Texts From Jane Eyre. From Mallory Ortberg comes a collection of darkly mischievous stories based on classic fairy tales. Adapted from her beloved "Children's Stories Made Horrific" series, "The Merry Spinster" takes up the trademark wit that endeared Ortberg to readers of both The Toast and her best-selling debut Texts From Jane Eyre. The feature has become among the most popular on the site, with each entry bringing in tens of thousands of views, as the stories proved a perfect vehicle for Ortberg’s eye for deconstruction and destabilization. Sinister and inviting, familiar and alien all at the same time, The Merry Spinster updates traditional children's stories and fairy tales with elements of psychological horror, emotional clarity, and a keen sense of feminist mischief. Readers of The Toast will instantly recognize Ortberg's boisterous good humor and uber-nerd swagger: those new to Ortberg's oeuvre will delight in her unique spin on fiction, where something a bit mischievous and unsettling is always at work just beneath the surface. Unfalteringly faithful to its beloved source material, The Merry Spinster also illuminates the unsuspected, and frequently, alarming emotional complexities at play in the stories we tell ourselves, and each other, as we tuck ourselves in for the night. Bed time will never be the same.

Mostly a “meh” for me. There were a good couple of stories in here, but a bunch of filler stories that left me with the feeling when you’re walking upstairs and you think that there’s one more stair but your foot just falls through the air searching for it and then you’re frustrated and disappointed. I don’t like giving less than 3 star reviews but I personally wouldn’t recommend this one.

I was really wanting to love this compilation of re-thought fairy tales but I'm either reading it in the wrong mood or I don't know. I guess I was hoping for more of a comedic take, like Texts with Jane Eyre, but this was definitely more on the dark, disturbing side. Which, don't get me wrong, is completely great, but not what I currently wanted to read. I did really enjoy the Velveteen Rabbit inspired story, holy was that creepy! I may try to finish the few stories I had left some other time but for now I'm setting my library copy free for someone else to enjoy.

“Daughters are as good a thing as any…” begins The Merry Spinster by Danny Ortberg’s wild reimagining of the Little Mermaid that ends in such grim fashion as to make the reader nod solemnly and intone, “truly, these are the end of times.” And yet, what a romp of a dark timeline.
