The Missing of Clairdelune

Ophelia has become Vice-storyteller to Farouk, the ancestral Spirit of the Pole. Now that her powers - and the threat they present - are known to all, she is forced to reveal the nefarious plots that have been brewing in Citaceleste and to throw herself into the political machinations of the Pole. In this perilous situation, the only person she may be able to trust is Thorn, her enigmatic fiance. As one after another influential courtier vanishes in suspicious circumstances, Ophelia again finds herself unintentionally implicated in an investigation that will lead her to see beyond the Pole's many illusions to the heat of the formidable truth.

An enjoyment to read. Am I confused the whole time? Yes, I am. Do I care? No, I don't.

I love the slowburn between Thorn and Ophelia. And I am along for the ride. I want to keep reading and learn what adventures they go through!

Ok, I loved this book. I definitely liked it so much more than the first one. The character developments were so well done and the plot so well constructed that I couldn't help but keep the page-turning. LOVED IT OVERALL. Oh, and especially the romance.

So good!!! This was a mystery at its heart, in a fantastical setting. Great use of the existing cast of characters, learning a lot more about some. I find Thorn so charming, especially when he's having trouble processing his feelings. There's no more taciturn and devoted male lead. Ophelia is a firecracker -- but the best character by far is Archibald. Really hope he gets something good in his life in the next book, it's seeming rather bleak for him after the trauma of kidnapping and disconnection from the Web. Looking forward to book 3 and finding out more about which powers each got in the marriage!

Wow. Genuinely haven’t been hooked on a series like this in years. So, so well written and the world building is amazing. Well thought out, too. I genuinely just stayed up all night to finish reading this book, that’s how good it is. Loving the slow burn!!!! Giggling, kicking my feet like a school girl at them. Also, Ophelia and Thorn are definitely autistic (if not just coded that way), which hell yeah we love that representation!

This book did not disappoint as a sequel! I found it to be even better than the first one. The Missing of Clairedelune is when Dabos finally seems to be showing us the much larger picture that we never got to see in A Winter’s Promise. There is so much more at play than originally expected and it is in the best way possible. We’re finally learning about the origins of the arks, the family spirits, uncovering some of the mysteries around Thorn and his family AND to top it all off there is a murder mystery that ties into all of it. This was a book that I just couldn’t put down, definitely worth the read.

** spoiler alert ** Pros: Continued world building, lore, interesting plot progression, new characters without being overwhelming, higher stakes, good suspense Cons: the execution of the romance subplot?? Ophelia distinctly complains about Thorn being absent from her and her family for the first 40-50% of the book during which they're just trying to get back on neutral terms. And then we're heavily main plot-focused (minus what felt like a VERY uncharacteristic kiss from Thorn) until just about the end when we're suddenly hit with dramatic displays of affection and confession from both of them...it was a good scene but without buildup, it felt like watching two completely different characters interacting with each other. Also very confusing to literally start fighting God at the eleventh hour I'm not gonna lie Still gonna give it 4 stars though - I mean, I had a good time.

This series reminds me of Harry Potter but in a post-apocalyptic world and so much more compelling. I wish that there was more romantic moments between Ophelia and Thorn but the world-building and unpredictability make up for it

3.5 stars. I am so torn about this book. It’s so different from anything else I’ve read, but I feel like there’s so much I don’t understand. Things just happen out of the blue and I don’t understand how they all relate to each other. As for the characters? We see so little of thorn. For someone who is an MC, and a large part of the story, we see him for what I would estimate is like, 10% of the book. There is so much more I want from this book, and I truly don’t know if I want to continue with the series.

I’m really not sure what to make of this book. On one hand, I loved it. On the other hand, it confuses me. I love the world and the characters. The emotional and forever loyal and true mind of Ophelia, the lovable (in a cold, distant way) and discreet heart of Thorn… all of that is great. It’s all the talk of God (but definitely not my God) that confuses me. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense and is slightly offensive but also not… not sure what to make of it. But besides that it’s an ok book. The plot is interesting, if a bit slow. And I do want to see what happens next.

"A proposito: vi amo".

When she was close enough, he rested his forehead on her shoulder. “The first time I saw you, I formed a very poor opinion of you. I thought you had no common sense and no character, and wouldn’t make it to the marriage. That will forever remain the biggest mistake of my life.” Ophelia felt torn between distress and fury. He didn’t have the right! He didn’t have the right to come into her life like this, turn everything upside down, and then leave as if nothing had happened. She felt as if she were breaking inside when Thorn tightened his embrace around her. “Don’t go falling down any more stairs, avoid sharp objects, and above all, above all, keep away from disreputable people, alright?” A tear rolled down Ophelia’s cheek. Thorn’s words were carving out an abysmal void inside her. She knew with absolute certainty that from the moment they separated, she would never know warmth again. Thorn swallowed against her shoulder. “Oh, and by the way, I love you.” Ophelia’s sob caught in her throat. She could no longer speak. Breathing hurt her. Thorn’s hands disappeared into her thick mass of curls. She became even shorter of breath. He clasped her body against his own, as close as was physically possible, and then pulled away from her with almost brutal briskness. He cleared his throat, suddenly hoarse. “It’s…it’s a little harder than I thought it would be.” He pushed his pale hair back, his eyes studiously avoiding Ophelia’s. The rims of his eyes had reddened; this sight, more than all the rest, moved her as she’d never yet been moved.

Maybe the most romantic passage I’ve ever read?!
