(3.75/5) 4 hours 33 minutes - Rereading this for the god-knows-how-many-th time, fills me with a lot of nostalgia. This is really the first book series that got me introduced to YA books. Not quite as good as I remember, but then again its been nearly 6 years since I first read it.

I ignored this book for years after I first watched the movie for Mortal Instruments when I was probably .... 13 or 14? So 9 to 10 years ago(?)
I don't remember much from the movie but I'm VERY sure that the movie was written very differently from what I've read.
It is a solid first book and it brings so much nostalgia for me.
I love everything, the characters and the story. YES, it is a bit problematic because I've grown up.
I still loved it and will continue my journey reading this series.

This book is probably .. a bit slow. I don't like the pacing that much and it was like a mix bag.
Everytime you put your hand into the hat something different comes out.
I still enjoyed it tho, it definitely held through and like all Cassandra Clare books it finds new ways to keep people apart.
I will need a palette cleanser before I read City of Glass.

I LOVED THIS. I will write full review tomorrow.

The story picks up immediately after the last events in the previous book City of Ashes.
Comparing this book with the previous one, this book is better.

Jace and Clary are not brother and sister. Jace is from the Herondale family and Clary is from the Fairchild family. Totally different people.

Recap :
Clary is preparing to go to Idris to meet the council and to also find the warlock that can wake her mother from the "slumber" she's in. She is (of course) still hung up on Jace as they try to adapt themselves into the dynamics of being "brother and sister". All the while, Jace is actively trying to punish himself for being in love with Clary.

The setting takes place in Idris the Shadowhunter capital of the world. It's clear early on that Idris is a beautiful place, guarded by the glass towers that protect the city from demons. Hence the title City of Glass.
This book is a step up from City of Ashes. To be frank, I didn't enjoy following the story in the previous book because the plot felt loosely connected. Ironically, City of Glass is a much more "clear" than City of Ashes.

Certain tropes did bother me while reading this, one of them being how Jace constantly sacrifices himself because he believes he's evil (when he's not). I've encountered, after reading a few of Cassie's books, that this is a very common trope in Cassie's male protagonists. Especially the men in the Herondale line. Jace is very much like Will Herondale from the Infernal Devices series. There are many similarities between the two, but Will has a vulnerable side that comes with his harsh destructive ways unlike Jace. All the while, Jace is just too angsty for me to handle.

The experience was still enjoyable though. Cassie's writing definitely improved a lot and the revelations of the key plot points was very satisfying even though it was a tad predictable.
This book is also an introduction to new characters and a new antagonist. I can't say who he is but he's weirder than Valentine.

The plot at the start wasn't really that bad until the end, which ruined shadowhunters for me (and is the reason why I keep this series behind my bookshelf for a year.

The art was really cool I liked it and I also love the graphic novel version because I do not think that I would have picked up the Mortal Instruments series for a long while if it were not for these graphic novels. They are really easy to read and enjoyable. As I said I have not read the chapter books of these yet so I don't know how different these graphic novels are to them but so far I like this series.
