The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart the second in a three part series. Reynie, Kate, Sticky and Constance are reunited when Professor Benedict goes missing. It's assumed he's Mr. Curtain's prisoner. All they have to go on is a series of cryptic clues, clues that will take them across the ocean.

All in all I loved the book but it took a little too long to get started. The book opens with a reunion of most of the major characters. It's played out to be a happy time on the farm where everyone is living happily ever after. But I just wanted to get to the good part!

Fortunately once the foursome get to the ship that's on the cover the story takes off. It has a similar flow of clues as a Dan Brown book or even The Club Dumas but aimed at middle grade readers. As all good puzzle mysteries should be written, the riddles and clues before the children are things that alert readers can solve too.

Different than but just as good as the first!

Wow, I can't believe I *actually* made it to the end. This was SUCH a hard book to read. There were just a lot of slow moments, and they were on the ship for too long! But it's funny because nevertheless, Stewart kept the storyline interesting, and I was not expecting the plot twist at the end. Will I read the next book? Of course! I love all the puzzles and riddles and problem solving. Plus, the character's quirkiness always keeps me smiling.

4.5 stars. I loved this book so much, so fun and adventurous, and I adore these characters. Constance Contraire is my favorite, of course. The plot was so entertaining, despite being a little slow to start. And there was some steady character development while still maintaining the “flaws” that sets each member of the Mysterious Benedict Society apart. This team really fits perfectly together, like a puzzle. The one thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating is that I’m just not invested in Mr. Curtain. He’s a rather underwhelming villain and I only got bored when the third act began and the children met up with him. I can’t wait for the next book though!
