The Patient

Jasper DeWitt2020
The Silent Patient by way of Stephen King: Parker, a young, overconfident psychiatrist new to his job at a mental asylum, miscalculates catastrophically when he undertakes curing a mysterious and profoundly dangerous patient. In a series of online posts, Parker H., a young psychiatrist, chronicles the harrowing account of his time working at a dreary mental hospital in New England. Through this internet message board, Parker hopes to communicate with the world his effort to cure one bewildering patient. We learn, as Parker did on his first day at the hospital, of the facility's most difficult, profoundly dangerous case--a forty-year-old man who was originally admitted to the hospital at age six. This patient has no known diagnosis. His symptoms seem to evolve over time. Every person who has attempted to treat him has been driven to madness or suicide. Desperate and fearful, the hospital's directors keep him strictly confined and allow minimal contact with staff for their own safety, convinced that releasing him would unleash catastrophe on the outside world. Parker, brilliant and overconfident, takes it upon himself to discover what ails this mystery patient and finally cure him. But from his first encounter with the mystery patient, things spiral out of control, and, facing a possibility beyond his wildest imaginings, Parker is forced to question everything he thought he knew. Fans of Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes and Paul Tremblay's The Cabin at the End of the World will be riveted by Jasper DeWitt's astonishing debut.

Well this was a cool story to read. Written as a forum thread, you follow along a psychiatrist who’s attempting to work with a very hard to reach patient but that’s all I can say so I don’t ruin it ! Would highly recommend for a super quick, plot twist read ! 4/5 stars !

Interesting idea, poor execution. These characters are so two-dimensional that it was hard to feel anything for them, so all the stakes were gone.

I'm really torn on this. While reflecting on a rating, my first thought was that I didn't enjoy the unrealistic turn this took, especially after their first interaction but looking back on that disclaimer at the beginning it makes the book terrifying. I think the ending with Jocelyn was really done though. Overall, I still think it's something I will think about for a while.

Oh, now this is doing the whole clean up a No Sleep entry and publish it right! The Patient is a tight and well-paced horror novel that gives readers a lot more than its original source.

** spoiler alert ** if we ignore the little “oh lol so Joe is actually a shape shifting monster hehe 😝😝😝😝” part then this was actually so good. it was also originally in the r/nosleep subreddit but it got turned into an actual book, so that's v cool.

I loved every second of this. It was sufficiently scary and definitely not something I should have read at night. A fairly short read but a definite page turner. A lot of things were rather predictable but that didn’t make it any less interesting. 5 stars.

If you are looking for a quick read this one is for you. It is a pretty short book that is written blog style, which is new to me. I haven't read any books written in that style before. All around it has a pretty good storyline although I feel the ending was a bit rushed. Which is why I gave it 4/5 stars. The characters could have used a little more building they were likeable at least. The storyline certainly was creepy and had me cringing at a few points that has the hair on the back of my neck standing on end. All in all it was a really fun read that I would definitely recommend to a few friends when it is released. Thank you bookish first for this ARC in trade for my honest review.

3,5 stars I was so intrigued by this and was enjoying it so much but I don’t think I was fully on board with the ending. I liked that it was ambiguous and made you question certain things, but it wasn’t completely my thing sadly. I loved the format, loved that we follow the point of view from a psychiatrist and I absolutely loved how it was set up, until the last 20% I honestly thought it was going to be a 5 star. This was one of those books that I had such a hard time coming up with a rating for and was a bit disappointed by in the end, but I still really appreciated it and would recommend it, but keep in mind that this is definitely a horror and not a psychological thriller.

Loved this book, was scared out of my mind, which is exactly what you want from a creepy horror and while I got annoyed with the narrator I enjoyed the concept and the fear I got from reading it.

Wow, I read this in less than 24 hours. This was a lot of fun and the author knew how to keep me turning each page. I put this book down once or twice to get things done but I couldn't stop thinking about how I wanted to pick it back up again to see what would happen next. It's not the most terrifying book I've ever read but I did appreciate some of the descriptions used throughout the story. The ending does get paranormal but I like how the author wrote in the format of blog posts so it felt like this was actually a true story someone was trying to tell the reader. It didn't feel like a cop out nor did it feel cheesy. The idea that this could be real is what freaked me out the most, even though I know it's not. I'd recommend this one. It's only 200 pages and compulsively readable.

4.5 stars I really enjoyed this horror! Asylums and creepy kids really freak me out so this weirded me out to no end. I enjoyed the blog/creepypasta style of the book and the twists. That ending just floored me, my jaw literally hit the floor. I know this one isn't for everyone but I loved it!

This book had so much of what I was looking for in a horror novel, and I finished it in one day. I was so intrigued about what was happening, I was shook by the twist, and I feel like I was able to make real-world connections to the horror aspects (which makes my horror reading experience much better)

(4.5 stars) This was really good and absolutely terrifying. I would say this is more of a horror novel than a thriller and it really packs a punch with only 220ish pages.

6.57 on CAWPILE I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this one. The idea is interesting but also very lack luster. I think it could have been better if it had been longer, more ominous. Instead its a very straightforward plot that seems a little too easy to deduce by an average psychiatrist.

CAWPILE score 8.43 A nice quick psychological thriller that is in Diary entry/blog entry style with short chapters that gave me the literal chills Very much Stephen King meets the silent patient.

vertel in geen geval dat de monsters die ze zien alleen maar in hun fantasie bestaan

ze = kinderen; want dan gaan ze dit internaliseren en zichzelf zien als het monster
