Brian Staveley

After learning the identity of her father's assassin, Adare searches for allies to protect the empire from invading nomads.

The Providence of Fire

Staveley only gets better! His mythologies come to life, the factions that occupy his premise get more interesting, more conflict-ridden, and at times, even frustrating in their false assumptions of each others' fates. Romance and chivalry are ignored for their darker cousins, for a morbidity that even bloodies the hands of monks. It's a ride, an absolute page-turner filled with humour and profanity, but it is also a commoner's insight into the strengths and failures of an imperial society, and what it will take to topple it, if need be.

'Will keep you turning the pages late at night' – Pierce Brown on The Emperor's Blades War is coming, secrets multiply and betrayal waits in the wings . . . The Empire's ruling family must be vigilant, as the conspiracy against them deepens. Having discovered her father's assassin, Adare flees the Dawn Palace in search of allies. But few trust her, until she seems marked by the people's goddess in an ordeal of flame. As Adare struggles to unite Annur, unrest breeds rival armies - then barbarian hordes threaten to invade. And unknown to Adare, her brother Valyn has fallen in with forces mustering at the empire's borders. The terrible choices facing each of them could make war between them inevitable. Fighting his own battles is their brother Kaden, rightful heir to the throne, who has infiltrated the Annurian capital with two strange companions. While imperial forces prepare to defend a far distant front, Kaden's actions could save the empire, or destroy it. 'Following in the footsteps of George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie and the like . . . Brutal, intriguing and continuing to head toward exciting events and places unknown' – Kirkus Reviews The Providence of Fire by Brian Staveley is the second novel in the epic fantasy series, Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, which began with The Emperor's Blades.

HOLY SHITBALLS THIS BOOK

I think I jinxed myself when I said in my review of the first book that it didn't seem as though Staveley would be leading his young gods down the Malazan route. LOL WHOOPS By the end of this book, I was eating my words.

All three siblings are barely hanging on to their lives & sanity in this book, & wow did I want to kill Adare 90% of the time. Beyond the three siblings, the secondary characters got some good development & reveals!

I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW JFC

Just barely 4 stars. This was way more politically intense than the first book. Not sure if I want to finish the series yet or not.
