The Reigning and the Rule

The Reigning and the Rule

Calia Read2018
Étienne Lacroix and I had a fire I thought would never die. Our love was timeless. An irreversible decision sent me back to the present day with a family I barely recognize, but I am determined to find a way back to Étienne. I can survive time. But I can't survive life without him. Time bends to no one's demands, so I must fight with everything I have to return to the past. However, I am terrified that the past I once knew might not look the same, and the man who once called me his surviving trace will no longer be waiting for me. Time bends to no one's demands but sometimes love does... The Reigning and the Rule is book two in The Surviving Time Series

3 of 5 stars ----- Didn't like it as much as the first book, The Surviving Trace, but I sure did enjoy it. There are a lot of inconsistencies and loose details with the aspect of the time travelling itself and that's my main problem. But regardless of that, I truly enjoyed the interactions between the characters, though sometimes it was kind of frustrating to read the push and pull relationship between Etienne and Serene. How much time they wasted instead of seizing every bit of their borrowed time. But I loved how passionate and sincere their feelings are with each other and I can't wait to read where their journey through time would lead them, especially now that Etienne really went a long way to meet Serene.

3.75 stars ✨ I’m usually not a fan of romances where the couple’s story spans more than one book unless it’s really good. The first one definitely ended on a cliffhanger so I was excited for what was in store! And I did really like it.. except it just felt like so much drama. I felt like I was watching an annoying sitcom 🤣 Selene can definitely lose her head sometimes.. and there’s some stuff that just came off as confusing and didn’t quite add up. Buuuuut I have a soft spot for all the characters in this series so you bet I’m on to the next one ☝️

Originally posted at Booklovers For Life 4.5 STARS One of my FAVORITE new-to-me authors I discovered in 2018 is Calia Read. I saw the synopsis for The Surviving Trace – a time travel romance – and knew I had to read it. A heroine who somehow travels back to the early 1900s in the Southern U.S. and takes over the life of a woman who looked exactly like her and had the same name? I had to so many high expectations, and I was absolutely blown away by this phenomenal book. The writing, the characters, and the story all sucked me in and I couldn’t get enough of Serene and Etienne. By the time I got to the end, I was DYING for their next book. Thankfully, Calia Read didn’t let me down! The Reigning and the Rule is the direct sequel, so you need to read The Surviving Trace beforehand. I honestly won’t say much about the plot, since it continues on from book one. All you need to know is that it’s just as good as book one, maybe with even more twists and turns. As soon as I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. I was easily sucked back into Serene’s baffling journey, the love she found with Etienne, and how she’ll do anything to keep it. She is such a strong, determined heroine, and I loved her for it. Etienne is as swoony as EVER. God, I love that man. SO many emotions ran through me while reading this sequel. There’s a constant question of “What’s going to happen next?” and a heaping dose of angst to go with. The Surviving Time series is a must-read, whether you like time travel romances or not. It’ll transport you to another world that you never want to leave! Just a fair warning though, the ending will make you scream!!! I couldn’t believe Calia Read left us there, and I’d give my soul up to read the third, and maybe final?, book. Thanks to the author for generously providing me an ARC to review. Gah, this book STRESSED ME OUT … in all the best ways. I’m reeling after that ending, too. This is definitely my new favorite series.
