The Seven Basic Plots Why We Tell Stories
Reviews

I don't know if I've ever been so let down by a book. At the beginning I was really loving it, starting by comparing the plots of Beowulf and Jaws was so interesting and I was looking forward to the book doing more of that, even if it was too long I was completely game for a book about how all the stories are alike in some fundamental ways. Unfortunately after describing those basic plots--in what felt like vaguer and vaguer terms as they went through it, the author just goes on to infuriate. Throughout the descriptions of the 7 plots I was noticing some claims involving gender roles and heteronormativity that I wasn't fond of, but it only got worse after. The author is absolutely fixated on not only gender roles, but also ascribing genders to certain personality traits. The bulk of the book is devoted to just excruciatingly walking through the history of (predominantly Western) literature and describing various story plots to an unnecessary degree. Not only does he cease to say anything interesting, but he's so sexist and homophobic it's impossible to take and I'm honestly tired of thinking about it. I'm tempted to give this only one star but it introduced me to the movie Kind Hearts and Coronets, so for that I'll give another.
