The townspeople worship Cthulhu and Dagon, a Philistine deity incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos.

My expectations and relative overexposure to the Cthulhu mythos may have soured this singularly underwhelming reading experience. "The Shadow over Innsmouth" was neither a compelling piece of horror nor a particularly well-crafted short story. What it is is an atmospheric, fertile expanse of decay and rot from which Lovecraftian lore can germinate and propagate itself into the unfathomable, twisted horrors we know today, with a generous heaping of xenophobia to boot.
