My first Children's book read of the summer finished - and what a book it is!

I'd heard a few recommendations from colleagues about this book, so bought it as soon as it came back in stock. Set in Papua New Guinea, it tells the story of Blue Wing - a young girl living with Siringen, the village shark caller, following the death of her parents.

Narrated from Blue Wing's first person perspective, she meets a young Japanese-American girl named Maple. The book follows the wonderful journey of Blue Wing and Maple as they search the ocean together for forgotten treasure, and more importantly forgiveness, and the means to overcome their personal troubles.

I found the first 100 pages as the characters were established a little slow, but the descriptions of Blue Wing's island life are beautifully rich and immersive. By the second half of the novel I couldn't put it down, and I'm not ashamed to admit I sobbed at the end - it's such a fabulous story. Highly recommended for readers aged 8-13, and anyone who likes a good yarn; a really wonderful story that will stay with me for a very long time.
