Don't know if the flatness of this comes from its being Young Adult, or from the smoothened, modern nature of his late Discworld, or from the cortical atrophy. Little of his obliquity and spark to show; it feels like someone else's writing, and no doubt it substantially was. Trades on past power, and what power it was: his witches are pre-modern doctor, social worker, priest, undertaker, and night watch. Came to say goodbye, and I got that after 5 short chapters.

Holy Moly. Pratchett's final novel (as unfinished as it may be) is a well crafted finale to a wonderful series full of fantastical peril, intelligence, and warm charm. Put simply this book is a tour de force of compassion, inspired storytelling, and witty prose. But it is also not for those who easily find themselves emotional. In many ways, this a serious novel, where we see Pratchett facing and writing about his own mortality. Fans will grieve anew at the death of a major disc world character and at the death of a beloved and one of a kind author. May you rest in peace, Sir Terry.

           I had to put off reading this book for a while, because I simply didn't want to read PTerry's Last Book. It's not as good as the best, of course. According to the afterword, he didn't have quite enough time to put all the finishing touches on it. But I don't think I've ever read a BAD Pratchett.

It just kinda breaks my heart how he went through his last few books saying goodbye to his characters, winding up their stories in very appropriate ways. There are a lot of little fan service bits here too, callbacks to Lords and Ladies, other witches, bits from other books. It all reads to me like an author finding his way to say goodbye.

I cried, at the beginning, and at the end. Letting Granny Weatherwax go was hard. Letting PTerry go is hard. 

I love you, Terry, and I love Discworld and the wonderful people in it.

And now I'm crying again, and it's worrying my dog, so I'll stop.

A Discworld Novel

I struggle to find the words to convey the feelings elicited by reading the final Discworld novel. Especially considering that the tiffany aching books were my introduction to the series. I wish there had been more time to finish this book but I cherish what we got regardless. This series will always be a joy to read, and it will live on even though it is now completed.

I love Terry Pratchett's work and I've read every single Discworld novel. And this last one is good and painful. Because if you read between the lines, if you pay attention to the small details you realize that he knew he was going. And there's sadness woven into the fabric of this novel.
Alas, the world's achanging. And the only thing I can add is "Crivens".
