Samantha Shannon is one talented author and how I wish I discovered this series sooner. This book was extremely fast past and very thrilling. I found that I decided not to sleep until I finally finished this book, because I just had to know how this book ended. I love how the book ends, I think it's honestly so smart to leave a book at  such a point. I'm not sure if this book only ends at the fourth book, but I am most definatly going to end this series this month no matter what. I love Paige. In this book, she finally answers to her powers, and realises that no matter what people try, she can always be that strong clairvoyant she always was. As underqueen, I find that she finally holds a respect for herself as well, which is huge character development. Will always recommend.

Damnnnnnnnn. I can’t wait for January 2020 for the release of The Mask Falling.

           I loved this book! There’s just something about Sam’s writing that ignites a fire in my soul. 
This book had me on the edge of my seat at multiple points. I was crying for the chivalrous Tom, I gasped for the betrayal of Jaxon, I begged for the safety of Eliza. I also mourned for what Nick and Zeke could of been if Zeke was not so influenced by his sister. I truly do hope that Paige and Warden can make amends and that they will be allowed to persue their romantic connections. I truly hope that Ivy and Róisín can be saved from the Beneath. 
It greatly hurt me to read about the colonisation of Ireland in such vivid detail. It certainly seemed to mirror my own history in some ways. 
I can’t wait to read the mask falling and all the rest of the bone season books to come.
I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who wants a futuristic fantasy series to read

I just don’t know what to do about this series. I’ve never been so excited and so bored all at the same time.

After the events of The Mime Order, the world has never been more unstable. Paige is now in the precarious position of Underqueen and must hold London’s crime world together. But that’s rather hard to do when your enemies are building technology that could wipe out all voyants. 

Paige is what keeps me going through this series. She’s suffered so much that she needs a hug and a medal for her sheer determination. She’s willing to sacrifice everything in order to get rid of the voyants’ enemies.

Warden and Paige break me into a million pieces. It’s just the most angsty and slow burn thing I’ve ever read. Warden is always their to help Paige and lift her up, even if he can’t show it in a human way.

One thing that I haven’t brought up in my review of the first two book are the villains. They’re actually very compelling and so evil. But you can’t help but root for some of them? It’s a confusing time.

I still have mostly the same complaints as the first two so I’ll just list them: mostly forgettable side characters, weird pacing and confusing world building.

I’m so glad that this book was shorter than the other two. Made it so there wasn’t as much waffle and got to the point more. It’s nice to see an author improving.

Overall, angsty romance and interesting world, but lacking in some areas. Not too sure if I’ll continue, I’ll guess we’ll see when the next book comes out. If I do it’ll only be for Paige and Warden.

This is the third time I've read this book and I STILL chewed through my nails because the last third of the book is that intense.

Sidenote: Paige Mahoney is just my kind of girl.

I remember being super excited for the second book, and the third, after the crazy cliff hanger in the Mime Order, and now I'm like meh... I'm still interested in the story and going to read the next books, though.

Finally the plot comes through! I've always enjoyed the characters, but I was struggling with the lack of forward movement despite such long books. This one definitely propels the story forward even thought it is the shortest of the three. I'm highly anticipating the Mask Falling!

Picking up shortly after the events that left Paige Mahoney Underqueen of London, The Song Rising was a bit of a snore for the first half of the book but did reward the persistent reader at the end with a gritty heist. Alas, while one of my more anticipated books of 2017, I did not enjoy this as much as I did the previous two in the series. I feel there was a lot of sitting around and talking that could have been condensed down and included with another storyline arc.

I will still continue to read this series as it moves forward, as I do enjoy Shannon's worldbuilding and think Paige Mahoney is a grand character.

What I liked 

Not going to lie, I went into this expecting to enjoy it less than The Mime Order, but I actually enjoyed it equally. It was such a solid third book and once again, I was hooked from page one. One thing I love about this series is how every book starts immediately after the events of the last one. It gives you a sense of importance and continuity! This book made me so sad and I actually stared into the void for a while after finishing this. I currently still am on a book hangover, thanks Samantha!

What I didn’t like 

Just like The Mime Order, my issue with this one is that it ends!

Oh GOD now I have to wait 9 months for book 4 🙃 Why did I do this to myself? 

I actually really like that every book in this series feels different to the one before it? This was all sneaking around and a bit political, while book 1 was this strange new world and mysterious and who can you trust, and book 2 was all sorts of crazy and edge of your seat action. Honestly, I love this series so much, I’m definitely going to reread before book 4 is out.

In The Song Rising, the stakes get higher and higher the more the story goes on: now Paige is not the unknown girl who led a revolution to flee from the immortal beings that kept her captive, but a queen leading criminals and beggars in a war against a system that forced all of them into hiding for the past 200 years. 

This book is more action-packed than the previous installment (I swear that I didn’t even have the time to take a breath lol) and I died a couple of times while reading it, but I loved it all the same. It was able to cement my attachment to this story, whose universe is getting more and more original and brilliant with every new layer added to it; I adore how both the language of flowers and the language of tarots were incorporated into the plot, it’s such a nice addition.

My adopted sons Nick and Eliza deserve all the happiness in the world but, as usual, for me Paige was the true gem of this book. She knows that she is not a perfect under queen (let’s be real, she is a 19 years old girl that doesn’t even know the full extent of her ability, it wouldn’t make sense in any other way), and yet she wants all the same to be at least a little bit better than the previous leaders, to give hope to her followers even when all seems lost (all of her speeches in this book are true masterpieces that hold an immeasurable amount of power). 

I also really liked how she tries to balance her relationship with Warden to her commitment to the cause, and even though she often fails, the fact alone that she is making an effort (together with the heartbreak she suffers from every time she tries to stay away from him) it’s so important. I mean, their bond formed because they saved each other lives, it’s not something decided by fate or gods but just by their own doing, and all of this is shown in the way they care and (more or less) trust each other: this is how a slow burn forbidden romance between a human and an immortal being should be developed, in a painfully slowly but nonetheless perfectly timed way.

This book also takes the time to show why Nashira is a hell of a villain (I still hate her with my whole soul, don’t worry): she is not purely evil and sadist for the sake of it, instead she does what she does because she is sure her way is the only one that really works. She incredibly realistic and believable (I can only bow seeing how she exploited human hatred to create an empire to control human themselves) and I’m so afraid of what she has in store for my babies, almost as much as I’m afraid of reading The Dawn Chorus (if you know, you know- I don’t really want with the consequences of what happened to Paige, my heart still hurts).
