Willard starts off the book with a preface or introduction that presents the current state of affairs. He states that Christianity is supposed to have the answer to the ills of man, but in practice most Christians suffer from the same problems that all men suffer from (perpetual sin, divorce, addiction, sexual sin, alcoholism, etc). So why should anyone think that Christ is the answer, if in reality people are not all that different once they "come to Jesus."

Here is the last sentence of the Preface, and also could probably be considered the Thesis of the book: "The Chapters that follow are written to aid you in understanding the absolute necessity of the Spiritual Disciplines for our Faith - and the revolutionary results of practicing these Disciplines intelligently and enthusiastically through a full, grace-filled, Christ-like, life."
