The Stillwater Girls

Minka Kent2019
Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air. Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return. As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls' mother, and he's not leaving without them. To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they've grown up with: never go beyond the forest. Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They'll discover what's been hidden from them, what they're running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

This book offers a captivating psychological exploration that grips from the outset. Its intricate character development draws readers deep into their complex psyches, making it difficult to set aside. The narrative's intensity keeps you invested, navigating the characters' emotional landscapes with compelling depth.

This book was very fast-paced. I figured out one of the plot twists first, but the other ones I didn't guess. I'm glad with how the book ended.

The last 100 pages or so get so intense! I really enjoyed this start to finish and liked how everything wrapped up, there were a few moments I had to to suspend my disbelief but it didn't ruin the overall story for me. I enjoyed each of the povs and watching their stories develop.

I really really enjoyed this book!! I think for me I was really struggling to line up the two storylines together at the beginning, and felt as though I was reading two separate books, but about half way through the book the two points of view we were getting started to make sense and fit together. I did enjoy both pov’s that we were getting. They were both very difficult from eachother and had their own conflicts whoch made them each very strong by themselves. I will say though, I did enjoy the book more when the two timelines collided!! As for the characters, I really liked them! I think they were all strong characters and I enjoyed reading about each of them the same! Overall, I really liked this book! I definitely wouldn’t say it was a strong thriller, but the storyline was interesting nonetheless!!

Short summary: Three sisters are being raised off the grid - they never go beyond their cabin, or leave the woods they’re raised in. One day their mother leaves to a nearby town with their younger sister because the younger sister needs medical help. But their mother doesnt come back for months, they’re running out of food, and so they have no choice but to venture out into the town as well. Once they leave their cabin, they uncover secrets and realize their mother has been lying to them all along. I read this because it was free with my temporary Kindle Unlimited subscription. I tend to read some reviews first just to get a general idea of how others think and feel, so I know if I’m getting into something decent. One review read: “The final reveal was so beyond absurd my eyes rolled back into my head leaving me unable to read the final pages.” I read it anyway, with this in mind. As I read, I felt a convoluted and ridiculous reveal coming. Somehow, though, the actual reveal was 1000x more ridiculous than ever imagined, and it came completely out of left field. The reason why it was so bad is because 1. The scenario itself is so preposterous, so it seems fake and 2. The foreshadowing is extremely scant. I won’t recommend against this book. It actually had a lot of positives: the characters were endearing, the author really knows how to build and heighten tension throughout, and it is a heartwarming story at the end of the day. All I’ll say is, if I paid money for this and discovered it ended this way, I’d be frustrated.
