Amulet: The StonekKeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi made it to the Cybils short list of the middle grades graphic novels. It was in a tight race all the way to the final vote with the winner.

I hadn't read the first book. My first impression was the artwork which seemed to be a good match to the teen winner, Gunnerkrieg Court (review coming) in terms of style not necessarily substance. The next thing that struck me was that I had come into the middle of something big and would want to go back to read the first in the series.

The pacing of The Stonekeeper's Curse is faster than the first book. No time is wasted on introducing characters or the world or even the new city they visit. There just isn't time because the elves are behind them and they want the stone. So there's a lot of running and hiding and it feels very much like a typical Doctor Who episode.

Author Kazu Kibuishi is based in Alhambra, California, close to where Ian and I were living before we moved to the Bay Area. I have since gone back and read the first Amulet book and will keep my eyes open for the next in the series.

Amulet, Vol.2 is a beautifully illustrated Juvenile graphic novel by Kazu Kibuishi that is part fantasy and manga. I enjoyed this more than Vol.1 for the illustrations, action, and sheer quirkiness of the characters and story. Amulet is a must read series.

I really like this middle grade graphic novel series, its really fun.
I'm hopeful that the elf prince is going to end up helping Emily and Navin by the end, he seems like he's already having a change of heart.

A fun children's adventure. There's definitely some good ideas, but there's something a bit simplistic about it that isn't really clicking with me. Maybe I'm just too old???

This was a great installment in the series and I enjoyed it even more than the first! This picks up right after the end of the first volume and is packed full of fun, adventure, and conflict. I flew right through it. I still think the artwork in this graphic novel series is beautiful. I really wish I could take some of the full page graphics as prints and hang them on my walls because they’re so beautiful. I love the introduction of Leon, he seems like a very badass character (though I love foxes, so I may be slightly biased). I really feel like the Amulet series is something that would appeal to a lot of people, no matter their age.

I really like the art style still and the characters and story developed nicely. We got some nice plot points dropped into it and a brilliant new character who I am very much looking forward to seeing more of as the series progresses.
