This was the first book I’ve read from Jane Harper and I do have to say that right from the beginning, I knew I was a fan of her writing style. She does a really great job of personifying the characters and making you feel like you really know them and their relationships, which was very enjoyable. This was another quick and easy read that I breezed through rather quickly. I snagged this one as one of my BOTM picks and it sat on my shelf until my TBR jar told me to read it. 

This book took place a small town island in off the coast of Australia and gave off ALLLLL the small town vibes – which I admit, I can be a bit of a sucker for. The police work done was the definition of shoddy small town police work. Everyone knew everyone’s business, which makes for a great read. 

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. However, I will say that it was a bit light as far as thrillers go. I had a lot more anticipation for said secrets that were being dredged up and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in feeling like the author maybe tried to censor a lot of the plot. I think this book would fit more into the YA category due to the lack of sordid details surrounding the crimes within the plot. 

Overall, I did really enjoy this read and would definitely recommend to most, especially those who are just starting to get into thrillers. I would also say it’s a great thriller palate cleanser to read after finishing a darker book.

I didn't love this one, and I'm a fan of thrillers. I felt like Harper kinda dragged this story unnecessarily. There was a lot of attention paid to characters and situations that weren't important to the overall story. While I understand that is a common tactic to make the ending surprising, in this novel it was just tedious.

This book was addicting. I didn't want to put it down because I just had to know what happened. That being said, I was a little disappointed by how quickly the ending wrapped up, and there is definitely a lot left unresolved. Also, the character's motivation for doing all these things (trying to remain spoiler free!) doesn't seem to warrant the actions they took, but maybe that just makes everything that much scarier because they took drastic measures for something that shouldn't have been so drastic.

The book is definitely a murder mystery trope, and I would say that it was distributed in that way very well. I also enjoyed the past being brought up within the characters I thought it added more layers to the book. I however was annoyed by Verity, at some points during the book she just really got on my nerves. Otherwise, I appreciated everyone else’s character. The twist in this book was absolutely shocking. I won’t spoil it, but you should definitely read this book.

It's wasn't that breathtaking mystery wise, i didn't feel myself glued to the book and waiting to see what happened next. But i really liked the way the author writes her characters, so it was pretty enjoyable

I felt a little confused and kind of sad through this whole book. Jane Harper does a wonderful job of creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and lingering guilt within a small community where a tragedy occurred many years ago. A former resident returns for the summer with his new family as the discovery of the body of a local girl launches an investigation into what happened to her that stirs up questions about past events. It was interesting to watch the story unfold from the perspectives of characters who knew the victim rather than from the perspectives of the investigators. You get pieces and occasional hints about how the case is progressing, but the focus is on how the murder dredges up the past and shows that the families impacted are still dealing with their grief. The ending was a little anticlimactic but believable, but I felt like I was almost distracted from the story because of the main character constantly leaving his baby on a beach while he went for a swim or taking her to a cave that's known to be very dangerous.
