i would give ttwp a rating of 100 stars if i could. brilliant, one of the best books i've read this year

the characters, their flawed evolutions, their feelings and the logic behind their actions are just excellent. this is such a great work. abercrombie keeps releasing masterpiece after masterpiece that's all i'm going to say.

The Trouble With Peace

Honestly I thought this was great. It takes a lot of cajones to be this mercenary with your main characters. It's essentially a pretty lengthy trilogy about how being an idiot is often confused for being a hero. Heroes are a neat idea in the propaganda but if you start believing your own hype and leading  armies like you can charge to victory, you're going to die. Or come about as close as possible while just barely avoiding it. Brilliant. The original First Law trilogy is what happens with competent people with big names they've earned set to changing the world. So far, The Age Of Madness is about killing your darlings. Your heroes are ponces and ingrates. They wield a reputation like it's a cudgel and have absolutely no hard experience to back it up. I think it's a pretty subtle jab from a Gen Xer about how lazy the younger generation are and how the old folks should still be running things, but if you put it in a vacuum I think it's a fascinating story so far.
