The Troubles With Us is a memoir that follows Alix’s life, from growing up on the Falls Road in Belfast, through bombs, shootings, teenage romances and out the other side.

As some of you know, I am Northern Irish, although you wouldn’t know from my accent (which I got bullied for at school, by the way). I did grow up in a vastly Protestant area so it was eye-opening to read about the experience of growing up in a Catholic family.

This memoir brings together stories of bombings, boys and friendship in a way that you would only expect if you had knowledge of Northern Ireland’s history. The way Alix describes her family life is so endearing and I felt connected in a way I had not anticipated. Her heart and soul was put into this book, and it shows. In case you couldn’t tell, I absolutely bloody loved it!

I urge everyone to read this book, whether you hail from NI or not - our country gets overlooked so often and to have a voice like this is invaluable!
