I can’t remember the last time I read an entire, more than 400 page book in one day. Danann’s writing is compelling. The world she has built and the characters she has created are insanely addictive. This was a perfect read for a sick day, as it captured my attention and distracted me from a super painful situation. (Side note: kidney stones suck.)

Unfortunately, even though I enjoyed this immensely I can’t rate it as highly as its predecessor. There were a couple of really big plot developments to the overarching story, but these took a distant backseat to the romantic element. In the course of this book we have not one but three weddings. I enjoy romance and a good wedding as much as the next girl, but I cared a lot more about the dimension-hopping Incubus demon and his witchy daughter, and about the introduction of werewolves into the narrative, and about the potential cure to vampirism. While these plot elements were present, they weren’t given nearly as much time on the page as their romantic and sexual counterparts. I have to admit, though, that I never expected to get Rick Rolled through wedding vows, and it made me laugh.

My Familiar Stranger was a potent and intriguing introduction to what will hopefully be a very unique urban fantasy series that maintains my interest through its end. The Witch’s Dream was far more firmly planted in the paranormal romance genre, with the more fantastical plot elements serving as a backdrop for the developing relationships. I’m hoping that the next installment in the series will be a more even balance of the two genres, or skew more solidly into the urban fantasy realm.

Even though this book was mostly fluff, there’s definitely a time and a place for fluff. I’m glad that this book came into my life when it did, because I really needed something light that could suck me in so completely that my real life troubles faded away for a while. And I plan to jump immediately into the next book. I’m committed now, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

The Witch's Dream continues from where My Familiar Stranger ended. It's packed with new supernatural characters and lots of weddings. We continue with the enjoyable,brotherly banter of the team and the relationship between Elora and Ram, while introducing a new female love for Storm.

The support a cast of interesting and believable characters gel well together. It was nice to see the continuation of themes and story from the first book into the second, without cutting the story off just because this is a new book. The budding romance between both Storm and Litha is a joy.

There was less action in this book but the story lives up to the previous book and remains sweet and heartfelt. There is plenty of humour in this book along with romance and heat.
