I enjoyed this book but I'm not giving it more than 3 stars (maybe 3.5 if i could). It's a funny look at a dysfunctional family and their dynamics while they sit shiva for their father's death. The main character is sympathetic and I do want to know more about his life and his family. However, I still had a nagging feeling that maybe it's just another dude writing about his so-called-mid-30s life and maybe that is what left me slightly cold as he waxed on why he can't get the hot chicks and why his hot wife left him. And you know in the movie version he'll be played by hottie Mark Ruffalo - no, more likely a younger hottie like Ryan Gosling (he's 30ish isn't he?).

This book too me so long to read but I'm happy I finished it. The story touched me and the grieving dysfunctional family reminded me of my own. It was relatable and dark but funny and had alot of heart. I felt a little left hanging at the end, wanting to know how things turned out. But I guess it was better left unknown cause Judd didn't know. Great book.

I was the weirdo laughing aloud on an airplane because of this novel. Seriously, it is hysterical. To be transparent, though, it did take me a good while to read. Simply because, while it is funny, there's not much more to it. Sure, I highlighted here and there, but the story dragged out for far too long and, if it weren't for the plane ride I was one, I'm not sure I would have finished it.

I assumed that I would really enjoy this book. I had seen previews for the movie a while ago and it looked good. Who doesn't love a bit of dark-family-humor? I really enjoyed, I'd say, the first half of this book. I enjoyed Judd's descriptions of the tragic series of events that has become his life. I thought the interactions and banter between the siblings, although sometimes unbelievable, was funny and kept a good pace. I think this kind of idea has been done before, but the author made this feel brand new. Keeping to one point-of-view was a wise choice.
 In the beginning you sympathize with Judd. His life sucks and he's been screwed over, he deserves some time to wallow and be a little cruel. However, this behavior drags on to the point that you're just like "we get it, but you've got some big things happening and you've got to make some decisions". Maybe the author did this on purpose because it is pretty realistic how people can become impatient hearing the same sob story over and over again. There are punches thrown, destruction of property, cheating, and a rape that is kind of just thrown in. Judd says it's not okay, but nothing ever happens to the woman. 
 Overall, this is a pretty enjoyable novel. However, I'd classify this as bitter humor, with hints of darkness. 

 Also, there is a blurb for Tropper's book "One Last Thing Before I Go" and the narration (even though there seems to be two narrators) seems very similar to Judd's. Tropper writes bitter men well, he reminds me of the Anonymous author of Diary of an Oxygen Thief. Enjoyable at the beginning, it seems dark, but pretty understandable; however, by the end you're tired and a little put off.
