(2.5) Mann is undoubtably a talented writer, but Tonio Kröger as a character is a bit annoying—and given that he's the focus of the story, that's an issue. By the end it becomes clear that his opinions on art are his because of his position as part of the bourgeoise, but when he gives his monologue to Lisabeta about how art necessitates suffering, all I could think of was how snotty he sounded. Writers in the intervening years since Tonio Kroger have proven that one can live a (relatively) normal life while being a successful writer—Grace Paley and Wallace Stevens come to mind. So, while *Tonio Kröger* is interesting as a meditation on how class inhibits art, the titular character's musings often come off as more arrogant that potent.

Bu defa çok sevişmedik Thomas Mann’cığım. Bu konulara kafa yormayı sevdiğini biliyorum ama nedense bu kez içine giremedim yazdıklarının. Bazı kitaplar eskimiyor ama bazıları da eskiyor işte – sanatın sınıfsallığı, sanatçının yalnızlığı gibi aslında zamansız gibi gözüken konulara dalmış Mann ama sanki günümüzden bakınca karşılıklarını yitirmiş gibi didiklediği meselelerin bazıları. Gerçi sonrasında Venedik’te Ölüm’de benzer mevzuları çok daha usta işi biçimde ele alacak, bu kitapta sorduğu soruların pek çoğunu Büyülü Dağ’da katmanlandırıp lezzetlendirerek yineleyecek, biliyorum. O nedenle bu novellanın biraz yüzeyel kalmış olmasına ses etmiyorum, bu saydığım eserlere bir girizgah gibi düşünmeli belki. Şu minik melodik cümleyi iliştirip bitireyim: “Ben uyuyacağım, gene de dans et sen…”
