Nick left them to it, going to the diamond still sitting in the glass case. “Where did you get this? It’s not real, is it? Ooh, it’s so 

 He pressed his face against the glass, causing it to fog up. “I want it.”

Nick sighed. “I think he has a crush on you.”

Dad nodded solemnly. “Makes sense. I’m very attractive.”

“I love us,” Miles announced when Nick and Dad pulled away from each other. “We’re the best. Screw Simon Burke. Whatever he’s got planned, he won’t make it far, not with our daughters, Pyro Storm, Guardian, and the Dad Squad.”

“Nah,” Seth said. “The great thing about Skwinkles Salsagheti is that we can share it.”

And so they did. For the next hour, they sat on the swings, laughing, Nick peeling off strands of candy and wiggling his eyebrows, putting one end of the candy in his mouth, holding the other out for Seth. His boyfriend didn’t hesitate, leaning over and taking the other end between his teeth before sucking it in. Closer, closer, until they kissed, sticky, sweet, and oh, how Seth smiled against Nick’s mouth, and for a moment, Nick could pretend that nothing else mattered. That they were just two queer boys without a care in the world.

“Tonight is going to be the best,” Jazz said. “I swear to god, if anyone thinks of crashing my party and monologizing about how evil they are, I’m going to handle it myself. It will not be slow. It will not be kind. My wrath will be unending, and whoever comes will regret ever being born.”

He waved at them awkwardly. “Hey. How you doing? Good, I hope. Don’t mind me. I’m just . . . doing my thang.” Before he could stop himself, he pulled out his finger guns. 

“This is the best day ever,” Gibby announced to no one in particular.

“Team Lighthouse,” she said. “The four of us. No matter what happens, we’ll always have today.”

“Ditto three times,” Nick agreed, and for a minute, they just sat there, hands together, watching each other.

“Good,” Jazz snapped, going for him again, only to have Gibby pull her back before she could do more damage. “You’re lucky I’m not in heels because I’d have shoved one so far up your ass, you’d have been gargling the cow the leather came from.”

“Kick names and take ass,” he growled dangerously. Then, “Wait, shit. I screwed that up. Let me—“

 and he jumped again and again, hitting each roof, the buildings growing in height, but that didn’t stop him. If anything, it pushed him further, to do more, to be 

 He wished his father could see him now. He wished all their enemies could witness what he was becoming.
