But before he could finish, Lucy yelled in unfettered joy, “You can breathe 

 Holy crap, Theodore! Let’s burn everything!”

“This is what happens when you sleep late,” Linus muttered. “Just when you think you’re getting extra rest, someone breathes fire.”

“But I believe the greatest weapon we have at our disposal is our voices. And I am going to use my voice for you, and for me. Hate is loud. We are louder.”

He laughed, and it felt like the sun coming out after the rain. “I . . . when I lived in the city, I dreamed in color, of places where the sea stretched on for miles and miles.” He looked at each of the children in turn. “But what I didn’t expect was that the color didn’t come from the ocean, or the trees, or even the island itself. It came from all of you.” He blinked rapidly, throat working. “This has been the best birt. Thank you. You’ve made me the happiest I’ve ever been.”

His tie was a lovely shade of reddish-orange, the color of fire. It was not lost on Arthur the reason Linus had picked that tie in particular: a little sign, a burst of flame in the muted gray of this rain-drenched city.

Arthur, too, wore a suit. His coat and trousers were navy blue, his dress shirt covered in blooms that reminded him of Talia’s garden. The top plastic button at his throat had been replaced by a brass one, sewn on with care. His tie was a wonderful shade of green, not unlike a certain bellhop. His shortened trousers revealed gray socks with little fluffy Pomeranians on them. Pinned to his shirt, a small gold leaf plucked from a tree on the island grown by a forest sprite. On his jacket, a pocket square, black with little red devil horns on it.

“Yes,” Sal said, eyes alight with mirth. “That’s exactly right. Lucy has magic banana powers.”

“He’s a magic banana boy,” Phee agreed.

“That sounds like the name of a band,” Lucy said. “Ladies and gentlemen, presenting . . . Anal Leakage! Guess what kind of music we’d play?”

Arthur shook his head. “By my count, it’s actually Phee’s turn. Chauncey, last time, you told the devastatingly beautiful story of how you fell in love, only to realize your affections weren’t returned because the object of said affections was a rock.”

“Rocky Stonesworth,” Chauncey said sadly.

“. . . Because today is the day that Linus Baker decides he wants to grow a mustache.”

” Linus retorted. “I happen to think I looked dashing.”

“Yeah, like you were dashing right toward us to kidnap us,” Lucy said.

Lucy blinked in surprise. “Really? That’s . . . huh. All right, I guess there’s always next time. Does anyone wanna bet me how much syrup I can drink before it starts oozing from my tear ducts? Last time, we got up to three bottles—“

“Of course not,” Arthur said. It had been four bottles.

“Which means they mingle,” Miss Marblemaw retorted, clipboard clasped against her chest, “with 

“And?” Arthur asked. “It sounds as if you believe they should be segregated.”

 she trilled loudly. “We don’t use that word, given the negative connotations behind it. Rather, DICOMY performed focus group research and came to the conclusion that ‘voluntary separation’ sounds much better than ‘seg’—that other word.”

Lucy shrugged. “Okie doke. Satan appease me!”

The mustache wriggled but otherwise remained as is.

“Oops,” Lucy said. “So, here’s the thing. I’m only seven years old, and still learning. I’m just a little guy!”

Welp, im drinking my tears. I absolutely love and adored the 1rst book and it is no different with this one. It'sso heartfelt, bittersweet, and my heart aches for all of these children and their growth. It's so good and so emotional. I absolutely adore these books.

Okay so i actually found this sequel a little less strong than the first book. I loved the children dynamics just as I loved the dynamics in the first one, and I appreciated that a few of them where given more time to develop as characters. I liked reading it from Arthur’s point of view, although I don’t always like when authors change POV in prequels or sequels. 

I think that it looked too much like a parody of Harry Potter (or any other fantasy of that kind) — I get that it was meant to be a love letter to the trans community and I absolutely agree with his choice of making J.K.R the villain — but I think it went too far compared to the first book. It doesn’t really flow with the first book itself and looks like a completely different story. It’s definitely because the themes that are taken into consideration are much more deep and important, but I felt like it was too much subtle. There’s a lot of talk about the government choices, about the discrimination people go through, and it totally makes sense that they would want to stop being subdued and take matters into their hands, but it’s difficult to believe that when there’s 7 children and it’s basically based on the love they feel for each other (and may I add — it was a little cringe, but maybe that’s because I’m aroace).

Anyway, definitely a great book for people in middle school/high school.

So wholesome I cried almost all the way through 🥹 My only critique (for the audiobook) is that the narrator really dramatizes certain moments, to the point that it's a little off-putting. Otherwise, love the voices of all of the very unique and adorable characters!

Please don't promote tj klune's stories. The book called house in the cerulean sea should have not been written knowing tj has based this storyline of adoption off the 60s scoop where the canadian government stole indigenous children from their families to put them up for adoption into white families. This systematic trauma is being used for a book that's completely now out of context as a "wholesome" story for tj's wallet. those who are directly affected by  this author using their actual pain as a community, has called out tj for this over the few years. Now he's still continuing the series based on this same storyline for profits whether he held himself accountable or not. No author like this should be supported. Please keep spreading this info.

A sweet and cozy sequel to the first book that gives us another glimpse into the lives of the characters everyone fell in love with the first time around. I will say I think it lacked some of the magic of the first book but I think that was owing to the fact that it had rather big shoes to fill in that regard and it’s hard to do heartwarming and cozy “found-and-forged family takes on world…again” without it being somewhat repetitive. I think the book occasionally got a bit lost in the objectives of the author, which isn’t a bad thing as the objectives are pure and good and I personally agree with the objectives—but that said, it can make the pacing a bit lumpen at times which is the reason I didn’t 5 star this. By trying to make extra super sure people get the points or understand the commentary it sacrifices some of the ease the first book had. I don’t disagree with the choice, it felt like this book more than the first was a love letter to the queer community and to people who felt excluded and othered by the world and I am for that 100%, as I am the queer community. It’s lovely. Both books are lovely.

Reading this was like coming home. I love Arthur and Linus so much, and their children are all lovingly crafted by Klune. I’d been looking forward to returning to this world for so long, and I’m sad that I’m finishing it. 

It was a little long, and cheesy in that Klune way. Some of it came off as preachy, though what was being said is important and should be said. I feel like It could have been cut down a little more, and it would’ve hit harder.

I was able to read an excerpt for this book, and as soon as I began I was immediately transported back to the world I hadn’t realized I missed so much. The quirky characters and their stories jump off the page, they are so dynamic and enjoyable. I am beyond excited for the full book and can’t wait to read more about this cast and their adventures.
