The Story of the Three Wise Kings

Three wise men of the East, having seen a new star symbolizing the birth of a great king, follow the star to Bethlehem where they present gifts to the newborn Jesus.

Kim Tyo-Dickerson

This is a stunning picture book telling the story of the three kings who studied the heavens and followed a new star to Bethlehem to honor the birth of Jesus Christ. In our Ethio-American family, we enjoy thinking and reading about King Balthazar as an Ethiopian king. In this picture book, dePaola centers Balthazar in Saba/Sheba, modern day Yemen, the other traditional kingdom associated with Balthazar's history and story. Nonetheless, this is a beautifully illustrated and written story for sharing at Christmastime and represents a lovely distillation of the legends and myths surrounding the creation of specific characters for the three wise men.
