Every word is perfectly chosen; in less than 200 pages Toni Morrison has distilled an imaginative narrative that beautifully and heart-breakingly encompasses the random injustices imposed by gender, race, religion and disease in 17th Century North America. Somewhere amongst the brutality and violence of the times, there is still space for humanity and the driving belief in love and hope for freedom. Highly recommended.

I had to read this book for one of my college courses through the lens of the social construction of racism. It was a difficult book to follow at first, I had to actually read it a second time to finally figure out what was happening, but reading it the second time, I realized that I really liked the book! It's a good book! Not the sort of book I would usually read in my spare time, but I liked it nonetheless.
