Ok but why is this book over? 😭 I didn't want it to end and now I'm going to spend the next few months reading all of Tope's backlist. And then find me some more African novelists to read after that.

This was my first Nigerian Christian fiction book. TBH, it was my first African Christian fiction book. I had no idea what to expect or how it would be different from American/Canadian Christian fiction. It met all my standards and expectations and more. I was constantly warmed by the beauty and depth here.
This had everything I love - lovable characters (ok I have a crush on Ahmari so is he going to get his own book?? Guys we have a novelist here writing an autistic male romantic lead!!) - Omg the faith and theology!! So good!! - real life, realistic story - plot kept me turning pages - humor.

Solid, solid book. Girls, Tope is a kindred spirit. This is the kind of book we love.

"Haven't they taught you not to judge a book by its cover?"
"Well, from what I've learnt in my few years, a cover is supposed to be judged exactly that way because that's how it was created." A small smile tugged at her lips. "That's why the cover was created in the first place - to be intriguing enough to draw in the reader."

“And who is he?” Tahira asked in a weary tone.
Winifred’s face took on a dream-like look. “A great listener and confidant. A friend with strong shoulders to lean on. He’s the One who wraps His arms around me when I don’t want to go on. Faithful when I eventually turn my back on Him because I doubt His love and One who sees me in my weakest moments and still tells me He loves me.” Goosebumps travelled up Tahira’s arm at Winifred’s feather-like musings and glazed-over eyes. “In fact, He sings over me and whispers poetic words to my hearing. And His grace empowers me to live the way He wants so I don’t need to do anything to win His love and affection.”

“Like God is interested in my sex life.”
“He’s interested in everything,” Peju said with great confidence.

Note: there are some adult elements that younger female American readers will find uncomfortable, but handled with so much grace and truth...don't let it turn you away from picking up Tope's books.
