Train to Pakistan

Marvelous maaZa

Set during the Partition of India in 1947, this novel shows how religion and politics can divide ordinary people and turn neighbors against each other. More than anything, it made me think about the sacrifices and suffering people went through when they were forced to leave their homes and start over in an unfamiliar place. The story is simple, but the emotions behind it are powerful. Even after so many decades, some of the questions the book raises about religion, hatred, and humanity still feel relevant today. While I appreciated its historical importance and message, I wasn't fully connected to every aspect of the writing style. Still, it was a thought-provoking read that gave me a deeper appreciation of what people endured during Partition. ⭐ Rating: 3.3/5

Mano Majra is a place, Khushwant Singh tells us at the beginning of this classic novel, where Sikhs and Muslims have lived together in peace for hundreds of years. Then one day, at the end of the summer, the 'ghost train' arrives, a silent, incredible funeral train loaded with the bodies of thousands of refuges, bringing the village its first taste of the horrors of the civil war. Train to Pakistan is the story of this isolated village that is plunged into the abyss of religious hate. It is also the story of a Sikh boy and a Muslim girl whose love endures and transcends the ravages of war.
