Interesting concept that must have been surprising in 1984. Today feels weak, lacking ability to create a believable structure to support the strong concept. Social ties are not defined, and characters feel like toys with no purpose. 
The recent movie Snowpiercer (2013) by Bong Joon-ho is based on the first volume, the best of the series, however fails where the book fails, leaving a weak impression from and idea that could take us much further.

The first book is great and presents a nice anticipation scenario, but the rest is really not at the same level and is frankly quite disappointing.

Buy the first book only, if you're interested.
