Tris's Book

Tris's Book Circle of Magic: Book 2

Tamora Pierce1999
Four elements of power, four mages-in-training learning to control them. In Book 2 of the Circle of Magic Quartet, earthquake damage has left Winding Circle vulnerable to pirate attack and Tris, Briar, Daja, and Sandry are working with the community to strengthen their defenses. When the pirate onslaught begins, two things become terribly clear: The pirates have a powerful new weapon--and they have an accomplice within Winding Circle. But they've failed to anticipate the fury of a young mage who has been betrayed once too often, and who has very stubborn, very loyal friends....

WHOOPS I read this all in one go, literally no one is surprised ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (On a more serious note: I love how Tammy makes these four kids face consequences. Also, it's so fun to go back to this "just learning everything" phase of their lives? They're always learning, of course, but it's so NEW to them in this quartet.)

So, I think this one went better than Sandry's book for sure. Comparatively there was a lot more story and emotion. It probably looks like there are way more cons than pros, again. However, I did enjoy this book a lot more and finished it fairly quickly. Pros • Character growth: Tris was such an unlikeable character in the first book and now she at least has some sort of personality. I get that her whole thing was she was abandoned, and no one liked her, but with an attitude like that how was anyone supposed to like her? This book was much better, and we could see her start to get some control over her emotions. • Broader storyline: There was more of a plot and conflict compared to Sandry’s Book. I liked that the conflict the pirates added was more complex and made the children dive deeper into their powers. Cons • Still short and relatively simple • No side effects?: I know it’s fantasy, but it seems unrealistic that these children could manage to control their powers so much and nothing bad happens. Throughout this book they were repeatedly warned about how dangerous it was to overuse their power and yet nothing bad happened to them. • Tied up a little too neatly: Like I already mentioned, no one got hurt. The only person who did we wanted them to get hurt anyway. Everyone made it out just fine and by using all their powers together they somehow had enough strength to defeat the evil pirate lord. All in all I'll give it a solid 4/5 stars.

I really liked this book. I really enjoy the audio books in this series. I sometimes get lost in the details at points. I really enjoyed not only the plot but also the characters various paths in this story. It was a much quicker read this time. I loved the focus on tris and also how the mages grew as friends. I did not see the twists towards the end of the book coming. I am excited to start book 3 :)
