A good freind of mine recommended this to me as his favorite book. The writing was beautiful, but I found the pacing rather slow for my taste, and this really isn't the sort of book I'd naturally gravitate to. This one's just not for me.

What he finds instead is a sullen stepmother who delights in killing birds; an uncle with the face—and heart—of a debauched child; and a fearsome little girl named Idabel who may offer him the closest thing he has ever known to love.

It's a shame that the plot didn't live up to some of the best writing I've ever come across in literature. 
Regardless of the lacklustre plot the setting of a Gothic and dilapidated southern mansion was perfect as perfect could be.
