Blue Period 1

ブルーピリオド 1

I have no choice but to keep creating. Even if there's no one waiting at the end.

That's why I like you, Yotasuke-kun. It's also why I hate you so much it makes my blood boil.

Maybe the truth is--it didn't have to be art; for me.

I wanted to tell him that I was just like him. That art is all I have.

Even when we look at the same scenery, we can't feel the same things. There's no need to feel the same things. But even if he doesn't say anything--just seeing Yotasuke-kun's eyes steeped in blue makes me happy.

I'm interested in people. History. Culture. This scenery. And art. I like all of those things because I can feel people in them.

If what you see is blue, then let it be blue, whether it's an apple or a rabbit.

Listen I am an art teacher so I may have a bias when reviewing a manga centered around art, but this was pretty good and brought back fun memories of how wildly stress-inducing having your art critiqued and picked apart by your professors is. Good times.

One of the best manga i have read in a long while

A manga about the struggles and rewards of a life dedicated to art. The studious Yatora leaves a dry life of study and good manners behind for a new passion: painting. But untethering yourself from all your past expectations is dangerous as well as thrilling... Yatora is the perfect high school student, with good grades and lots of friends. It's an effortless performance, and, ultimately...a dull one. But he wanders into the art room one day, and a lone painting captures his eye, awakening him to a kind of beauty he never knew. Compelled and consumed, he dives in headfirst -- and he's about to learn how savage and unforgiving art can be!

"Art is language without words"

This book wrap-up basic study art in simple and easy to understand for beginner or someone not really knowing about art class. Beside giving information about art in general, this book also talking how to discovering your passion and progressing toward it little by little. I love how the characters developing step by step and the relation with others. Beside the theme about Art, the book not having connection with picasso and some profession artist it's the best point.

"Art is interesting because you can't understand everything just from reading a book. Our senses lead the way, and logic will follow."

while, naturally, the general coming of age, identity and finding yourself through your passions themes are much more central to the narrative, it is a great joy for me that those are explored through yatora's (and his peers') relationship with art in particular. yamaguchi is not only knowledgeable about art theory and techniques but also finds the way they speak of it is a language on its own speaks to me, personally. their love and passion for art is evident in the first volume alone and i am excited to be taken on this journey.

This manga is definitely putting a stop to the months long art block I’ve been going through. It’s especially helpful that it’s a really good resource for techniques hahaha while being entertaining. Among all of the sports mangas and even music manga, this type of art manga is longggggg overdue and it’s very exciting that we’ve finally got it

A manga full of hope and of art

Key words: manga, art, educational, fiction, contemporary, teenager, young adult

As you can see, I classified this manga as educational. This is because, in my opinion, it teaches you about the basics of art (drawing and painting) through the story. I found that really interesting and I learnt some things thanks to it. My main problem with this manga is that it focuses too much on art and not at all on the characters. We know from the summary that Yatora is considered a delinquent as well as a popular guy in his high school but we never follow him through his day for example, just a little bit at the beginning. It is also the case for all the other characters, we only see them in art class and don’t know anything about their background. In other words, there is a lack of development for the characters. Apart from this, I found the drawings really pretty, totally my style and I enjoyed it a lot. It was really nice to look at it. Moreover, the plot is promising. Yatora is following is passion and is doing everything he can to succeed. I think it’s an important mindset and that’s why I would recommend it to teenagers; to make them believe in their dreams.

3.5/5

Thank you Netgalley for this eArc in exchange of my honest opinion.
