Emma Lord2020
"A witty rom-com reinvention ... with deeply relatable insights on family pressure and growing up.” - Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka, authors of Always Never Yours and If I’m Being Honest “An adorable debut that updates a classic romantic trope with a buzzy twist." - Jenn Bennett, author of Alex, Approximately and Serious Moonlight A fresh, irresistible rom-com from debut author Emma Lord about the chances we take, the paths life can lead us on, and how love can be found in the opposite place you expected. Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming — mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account. Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time. All’s fair in love and cheese — that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life — on an anonymous chat app Jack built. As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate — people on the internet are shipping them?? — their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.

pepperjack are so cute!! i need to try that monster cake and grilled cheese!!

this book had good characterization with family dynamics especially with how those dynamics affected the self identity of the main characters. also highlighted the insecurities of being a twin

3.5 stars It's a good book, nothing earth-shattering but a fun read. It's been a month since I read it and to be honest I can't remember much of the plot (I have a really bad memory, but it shows that the story have not stayed with me). I really liked the characters, specially Jack. Loved the dynamic between these two and loved the premise of "oh no, we are rivals and now people ship us on the internet also you are funny and cute let's hang out". It honestly felt like a fanfic, not a bad thing, it just the energy it gave me. Again, it was a good read, kind of flat in my opinion but I still enjoyed it.

yeah, you heard me — five stars!!! i said it and i don’t care. i love this book so much 🥺 pepperjack is everything. i swear to god this book honestly had it all for me. all the little, flirty moments between jack and pepper. and jack, ilysm. his pov was the sweeeetest especially whenever he was thinking of pepper; see quote below: "It’s just—I don’t know. It seemed like maybe we were having a moment. Like maybe we’d had a bunch of them, and they all kind of snuck up on me until they were right in front of my face, until she was popping out of the water with that full-wattage, ridiculous smile that made it feel like my blood changed its composition in my veins." i’ll be thinking about these two for DAYS. thank you emma lord for this amazing “you’ve got mail” kind of story. considering how that movie is one of my favorites, i needed it in my life. side note: i’m absolutely dying to try the pepperjack grilled cheese. 💛

2.5 pepper: you don't understand the highs and lows of being rich white private school girl in new york running the twitter account of america's 4th biggest fast food chain that is owned by my mom this was a very easy read and it was kinda cute, but i felt like the author kept trying to get us to feel bad for pepper which did not work at all for me. at the end of the day she was just a rich white girl. her biggest issue was literally her mother forcing her to make tweets hnnffjhd even the 'we couldn't afford rent back then' didn't rack up pity points for me i'm sorry... the fight she had with her mom when she finally 'exploded' was also quite anticlimactic tbh. where is the drama? where is the jack and ethan fist fighting to resolve their issues? i liked jack though, and they were cute together! and the ending was sweet! still want to know how she went from patricia to pepper

★★ // i was so sure i would love this book, until i got to the chapter before the epilogue and i just kind of felt weird about everything. suddenly, i am not sure if it was even okay to feel the same way about Pepper and Jack. i also did not like that this revelation was put out there at the last minute with no time to get properly resolved. i don’t hate the book because i enjoyed it for the most part. i read this on audiobook and really liked Dan Bittner who voiced for Jack. but damn, that turn in the story really made the difference for me. what a waste.

Voted for this book under the Young Adult Fiction category in the 2020 Goodreads Choice Awards (Opening Round and Semi Final Round). ****** This was very cute and heartwarming ❤ There's a lot of baking (and grilled cheese) in this book so I would suggest having some cake and grilled cheese already with you before you settle down to read this. It's hard to believe this is Emma Lord's debut novel. I am definitely going to check out her future books :D

This was such a surprisingly cute read. I read Begin Again previously and was pretty bored, but I flew through this, and thought that it was a nice and quick read.

I think this book got me out of the reading slump I was starting to experience. While this book was cheesy I liked that it was centered around social media as well as a feud between two families.. I still think the app getting banned from school is stupid but not surprising because schools love banning anything fun.

Second book of my Covid-19 isolation. (If I'm going to add this to all of my isolation reads? Yes, because I never thought I would be stuck at home for something like this.) The title is pretty accurate on this one. Filled with funny tweets, delicious recipes that had me salivaaating for a grilled cheese and a pretty cute relationship. I love how Jack and Pepper bonded over their love of food and hilarious comebacks.

Indeed a cute story. I read it in one go. It’s the kind of cute YA I like, with family involved and character development. And the whole story feels real, even though I’m not from the US and have never been to NY. It’s not like Gossip Girl or teen stories where teens act like irresponsible adults. Even though I wanted to blame Pepper’s mother for everything now that I am a mother myself (and I judge other parents, just like everyone else) I remember being a teen and dealing with my parents issue in the same way Pepper did. And resolving stuff also in the same way. Even the drama they all go through felt real, not forced like so many YA books make it. If you’re looking for a cute YA novel with romance, go for this one.
