i was hooked from beginning to end, the writing was extremely fast paced and was so thought provoking i couldn’t put it down. i loved how as you read more you started piecing together how everyones stories could intertwine with one another. i loved the premise and execution so much. not much really to say as i truly believe this is a book you have to go into blind but i don’t think it’ll disappoint. a part of the ending made me want to throw up and had my stomach rolling. that was NOT the way i thought it would go. 

but im so excited to read more of uketsu’s work and have of course just brought the other two books (book buying ban who? i dont know her.)

 Strange Buildings
” by Uketsu is one of those horror novels that slowly crawls under your skin the more you think about it. What begins as a strange puzzle about suspicious floorplans gradually reveals something much uglier underneath: the idea that a building itself can be designed with malice from the very beginning. In the book, houses are not simply places where crimes happen. The houses themselves are part of the crime. Hidden compartments, concealed alcoves, strange dead spaces, and impossible layouts all exist because someone intentionally designed them that way. The architecture carries murderous intent. Reading it reminded me of H. H. Holmes and his infamous “Murder Castle” during the late nineteenth century, or the barber shop in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, where victims were killed upstairs before their bodies slid through hidden chutes into Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop below. It also brought to mind the maze-like structure of Kowloon Walled City, whose cramped interiors concealed illegal gambling dens and criminal activity behind the ordinary appearance of everyday businesses. What ties all these examples together is the terrible truth hidden beneath ordinary life. In Uketsu’s work, the horror does not come from ghosts suddenly invading a safe home. The horror is that the home itself was never safe to begin with. That is what makes the novel so effective for me. A house is supposed to symbolize protection and comfort. It is where people sleep, eat, and build families. It is the physical shape of security itself. But in architectural horror, that meaning collapses. The walls are not protecting you from danger; they are trapping you inside it. Uketsu’s horror sits somewhere between folk horror, architectural horror, and true crime. Folk horror usually turns villages, traditions, and communities into sites of sacrifice and control. Uketsu simply moves that same terror into the modern house. Instead of the village becoming the trap, the house becomes the trap. And unlike a typical slasher story, where a killer chases the victim, architectural horror feels colder and more disturbing because the violence has already been planned into the structure itself. The killer does not need to improvise. The floorplan already guides the victim toward confinement, isolation, and death. The building becomes a machine designed for harm. That is why H. H. Holmes remains such a haunting comparison. His hotel was not simply a building occupied by a murderer. It was engineered for murder: staircases leading nowhere, hidden passages, gas pipes connected to sealed rooms, and concealed chutes for bodies. The structure itself performed the violence. Murder became less a crime of passion and more an industrial process, and Uketsu taps into that same fear. The horror lies not only in cruelty, but in design. Someone sat down, drew these blueprints, and carefully imagined how another human being could suffer inside them. But what ultimately disturbed me most about the novel was the motive behind everything: money, resentment, and generational hatred. The Rebirth Congregation cult sells the illusion of healing. They claim their floorplans can cleanse adultery, repair family bonds, and create harmonious households. Yet in reality, the homes they build only deepen distrust and alienation. Families stop confronting their real problems and instead rely on mystical layouts and spiritual promises. The result is even more emotional distance between parents and children, husbands and wives. The irony is brutal. A movement supposedly dedicated to strengthening the family instead creates houses filled with secrecy, silence, and paranoia. Children grow up sensing that something is wrong in their own homes, even if nobody openly says it. The hidden rooms and strange layouts become physical manifestations of buried resentment and unresolved guilt. And when the truth about the Hikura family is finally revealed, the entire novel suddenly snaps into focus. At first, Yaeko and Masahiko Hikura appear to be the masterminds behind the cult. But the true architect of the whole operation is actually Yaeko’s daughter, Masahiko’s wife, who turns the cult into an elaborate form of revenge against her mother. Once that revelation appears, everything else makes sense. If the cult itself was born from familial hatred, then naturally the houses it creates would spread that same poison into other families as well. The homes are not designed to heal relationships. They are designed to preserve resentment, secrecy, and emotional punishment across generations. That, to me, is the true horror of “Strange Buildings.” Not ghosts, not hidden rooms, and not murder mechanisms, but the realization that a house can quietly inherit the ugliness of the people who designed it.

MY MIND IS BLOOOOWWWN OMG i need the next book!

As wild as it is, I liked this the most out of all the Uteksu books so far. The plot is more coherent and (I would say) more realistic than Strange Houses. And it was nice to deduce and figure out the events along with the main character. The events were very weird but I can imagine it happening in real life. Just be ready for some issues tackled because they can be very disturbing.
